1. MALACHI UNDERWOOD was born between 1814 and 1818 in GREEN CO, KY.^1–8 He lived in Shoal Creek, Johnson, Arkansas, United States in 1860.⁷ He lived in Shoal Creek, Johnson, Arkansas, United States in 1870.⁵ MALACHI lived in Delaware, Logan, Arkansas, United States in 1880.⁶ He lived in Delaware, Logan, Arkansas in 1900.⁸ He died in 1910 at the age of 96 in LOGAN CO, ARK.⁹ MALACHI was baptized into the LDS Church on 17 Feb 1936 in ARIZO. Malachi UNDERWOOD was Born between 1809(census records)and 1818(Union Army
record)in Green Co,Ky.
Both parents were born in NC(1880/1900 census).
He married Louisa TRAMMELL(1936 Family Group record to LDS in Ariz by
daughter Nancy Ann Underwood Ragsdale says TRAMULLE)or HENDERSON(Malachi's Union pension application) in Scott Co,Ark in 1846.
His mother may have been a BOX and may have been Cherokee Indian.
Some BOX/VERNON/HENDERSON's are buried in an Indian burial site(36 or 37 buried there) on Vernon Mtn,River Mtn Rd,Delaware,Logan Co,Ark
They were in Johnson Co,Ark 1860-1870 and in Logan Co,Ark 1880-1900.
They named their first son James Gideon Underwood(born 1847 Madison
Co,Ark-Union Army record).
Malachi died in 1910 at age 100(Graves Cemetery tombstone says born 1810)
in Delaware,Logan Co,Ark
He may be related to:
The two James'(one older,one younger),William,and William B.Underwood of
Green Co,Ky 1810-1820,Madison Co,Mo 1830.Scott Co,Johnson Co,Ark 1840.

close to them is Ceria (widowed female age 51,born NC).
I am trying to connect Malachi to these Green Co,Ky and Madison Co,Mo and
Arkansas Underwood's.

3.Leonard G. born 1823 Ky,Elizabeth born 1836 Mo, and Cynthia Ann born 1834
in Mo are siblings (from the 1850 census)
4.Ceria was in the 1850 Johnson Co,Ark census, age 51, born NC
5.William Berry/Berryman Underwood was born between 1820(census) and 1826 (Pope
Co,Ark history)
6.Reuben C.Underwood was born about 1823 (census records) or about 1817(U.S.army
record)
7.Malachi was born about 1813-1818 (census and Army record)

The only Underwood family that closely 'fits' in the 1830 Madison Co, Mo and
1840 Scott Co,Ark census:

The older William B.Underwood does not show up after the 1840 census.
I'm not sure how Azzariah/Isarias and the James from 1840 Johnson Co, Ark 'fit'
unless they are siblings of the older William B., and possibly sons of the older
James in 1810-1820 Green Co,Ky. There is also the puzzle of the William,Sr and
William,Jr in Green Co,Ky and Madison Co,Mo. And the William age 52 in Yell Co
Ark in 1860,married to Malissa (BROWN from a Madison Co,Mo marriage record).
Maybe the puzzle pieces will all fit someday. At least knowing that Ceria is
Malachi's mother has put us one step closer.

From Daisy Raulston's notes from Faye & Truman Underwood 1996
...1850 [census] Isarias Underwood born about 1798 NC   Johnson Co,Ark

These three men were probably brothers and came from NC to Kentucky 1820 or before
according to ages of the children. Thebn to where some of the children were born
in Mo then on to Ark by 1840
By 1860 Isarias had died and Lucy Underwood and Chetesler [Chester] and Elisabeth
Ashcraft were living next door to Rubin Underwood in Delaware Township Yell County,Ark.
It makes me believe that Isarias and Lucy were the parents of Malachi, Rubin, and
William Berry Underwood.
The marriage of Ezerias Underwood and Lucy Skaggs lines up with what my grandma
Lucy Ann Underwood Rollans had wrote in the Cortis Johnson Bible,in it she said that
her grandmother on her father's side was a Scggs[sic]/Skaggs.
Chet or Chetlester that was killed by bush whackers during the Civil War was my
grandmother Lucy Ann Underwood Rollan's uncle. I have heard her tell about him being
killed.
...A.G.Underwood living next door to William Berry Underwood in 1850 may have been
another brother to William Berry Underwood

There is no Chet/Chester in the Index to Ark Conf Pension Appl. But there are two
Chet Underwood's listed in the Index to Ark Conf soldiers:

From all this it appears William Berry and Chet/Chester were brothers and
Isarias and Lucy their parents. Isarias and Malachi's father were probably
brothers. If Isarias,James, and the William B. in Scott Co,Ark 1840 are
brothers (as suggested by Daisy Raulston), then Malachi's father must be
William B. The age of James as shown in 1830 and 1840 is too young to be his
father.

Malachi's mother may have been a BOX of Cherokee Indian ancestry. According to a descendant in Delaware,Ark, his wife Louisa TRAMMELL HENDERSON's mother and baby brother are buried in the Indian Cemetary on River Mtn Rd (Vernon Mtn)(near Mary Jane Underwood Roberts homestead property) in Delaware,Logan Co,Ark. Others buried there (36 or 37 total) are VERNON/BOX/HENDERSON of Cherokee Indian ancestry. There are no grave markers.
An archeological dig was begun there in 2000 or 2001.
Last year I received some widow's pension information on the widow of Robert F.UNDERWOOD of Logan Co,Ark (he died in the Civil War). It shows Malachi was his brother. The 1850 Johnson Co,Ark census shows Robert F. in the household of Ceria (f) UNDERWOOD. From all this, I believe this was Malachi's mother. The census says she was born in NC about 1799. Malachi in the 1880 and 1900 census showed both of his parents born in NC.
I have info from another BOX researcher that they were of Cherokee ancestry. But so far I have no 'proof' other than much speculation. I haven't found where any of the BOX or UNDERWOOD's enrolled as Cherokee. But from all I have read, it is understandable why they would want to pass as white, because of all that was done to the Cherokees.

I have talked with you before, and I believe you may have sent me a family tree a few years ago. It was not compatible with my computer. I am directly related to Malachi Underwood, and I would like a copy of your family tree, even if I need to send a self addressed stamp envelope with fees for copy as well. As we have a lot of the same information but I am confused on a few things. Would love some research. Its been quite a long time since I have had a lead on my Underwood line.

a week out of state. Will fix up the descendants this evening and send them
to you in a little bit. We have bunches of them. I think I have about 125 of
them. I have joined an Indian Tribe using the information on Nathaniel
proving his Cherokee Heritage and I had to list all of his descendants who
are still living. Then there are the ones who are no longer with us. I have
reason to believe that Belva was of Cherokee blood too but have not proven
that as of yet. Have you ever heard a hint of that?   Will send it in a

My name is Sandra Varnell and I live in Winnfield Louisiana. I am descended

Marion Heywood Box . I noted on your post that Nathanial was of Cherokee
bllod.

I have heard my aunt talk about her grandfather having indian bood in him but
she did not know what. I have researched his father Micjah back to Pontontoc
Mississippi where he taught among the chicsaw indians. Further back we are
descended from
Robert Jr. and his father Robert Boxelder.

I am interested in the Indian Box families. My ggrandmother, Louisa Isabell Box
Callison, daughter of Ida Orlena Box, had straight black hair and black eyes, and
her brother, James Crockett Callison, also had black hair and black eyes. Samuel
Callison, their father, had light brown hair and blue eyes. I have always figured
that Ida Box had Indian blood or was Welch, as they also have black hair and
eyes, but I have never heard of any of the Box family being Welch.

As I am sure that most of you know, up until the 1860 census, if a white man was
married to an Indian woman they did not count her on the census, and sometimes
they did not count the children. That was up to the census taker, so you might
find a man listed with no wife and family when he was actually married and had
several children. I have never been able to find the parents of Ida Orlena Box,
but some have suggested that she might have been the daughter of James Box who
was in Alabama when she was married in 1834/35. They came on a wagon train in
Jan. 1835 to Texas. I have never been able to find a marriage license for her and
have suspected that perhaps she was one of the S.C. Box family. Many of them came
to Texas in the same wagon train of about 50 people.

Hi Joyce,
I saw your email on the BOX list on rootsweb about your BOX genealogy. My
Dad has always said his father was part Indian, either Cherokee or
Choctaw. One researcher in Logan Co,Ark told me that my
great-great-grandmother Louisa TRAMELL HENDERSON's mother was a BOX and
is buried at a Cherokee Indian burial ground there on River Mtn.
BOX,VERNON,UNDERWOOD,and ROBERTS are buried there. There are no markers.
[added note Nov 2001:Malachi's mother may have been a BOX, not Louisa's]
Louisa was born bet 1818-1826 in Illinois. In the 1880 census she gave
her father and mother's birth places as NC and Tn. I think that she may
some how tie to the Henry BOX (b.SC) who was in Scott Co,Ark in 1840.
Malachi UNDERWOOD married Louisa there in 1846.
I have never found any BOX family's in the Cherokee Indian rolls. But
from what I have read, I understand why one would not do so.
Just thought I would pass this on. You never know how a connection will
be made some day.

I'm not sure if I have enquired before. But my great-great grandmother was Lueliza TRAMMELL (LDS Family Group given by her daughter in 1936) or Louisa HENDERSON (her husband Malachi UNDERWOOD's Union army pension application). She was born between 1818-1826 in Illinois. Her parents were born in NC and Tn(1880 Logan Co,Ark census). So much of this sounds like what you have it is uncanny.
I have the Trammell book by Betty Trammell Snyder and it shows some of the info you gave above. But that Eliza that married an Underwood moved to Ga.
Have you found more info on the Eliza/Louisa/Lueliza you mentioned above?

Letter from Dorothy Tucker 6/1998:..Louisa's mother and baby brother is buried in the Indian cemetery on River Mountain on the land Mary Jane Underwood [Roberts] homesteaded which is where I was born and raised and still have some of the land after Dad [Joe Roberts] died it was divided between his children there is no stone but I can show you about where it is...Reuben's great-granddaughter lives in Dardenelle. But I don't have any information on Louisa's father at all she was Indian that is why she is buried there. The Indian buried there were Henderson-Box-Vernons that is where the mountain Vernon got its name...

My dad's name is Leslie Cecil Underwood, son of Flora Underwood, daughter of
James Gideon Underwood. Flora was not married when Leslie was born so she
used her maiden name of Underwood. ( She later married George Brown.) James
Gideon raised Leslie. Malachi Underwood is Leslie's ggrandfather. It looks
like you have done a lot of research on the Underwoods. Have you found any
records showing proof of Indian ancestry. Our family always knew we were
part Indian but never had proof.
Never really thought about it until our parents have both passed away. Would
appreciate any thing might have. Leslie was born and raised around Gans, Ok

Thanks for the e-mail. I do not remember if I said in my e-mail that (my Dad)
Leslie's mother,Flora Arjenty Underwood had Leslie out of wed lock. I
heard(no proof) that his dad was Elex Ross, a full blood Indian. Flora
Arjenty married George Brown and had 5 more children, I have those names if
you ever need them. Flora died at 35 years old. Leslie was raised by his
grand parents (James Gideon & Eliza). Al, on you Ragsdale Genealogy

My Dad has always said his father, Thomas James Ragsdale, was part
Indian. His great-grandmother, Susan (Spears or Sheppard) Barnes, also
told him she was 'Dutch,Irish,Indian' or 'Black Dutch'. She would not be
on the Underwood side though. But I have never found 'proof' for her
Indian ancestry.
Tom Ragsdale's mother was Nancy Underwood Ragsdale. Her parents were
Malachi & Louisa (Trammell or Henderson) Underwood. I have never found
'proof' of either having Indian ancestry. But one Underwood
descendant(Dorothy Roberts Tucker,Delaware,Ark) says:
"Malachi's mother may have been a BOX of Indian ancestry. Louisa's
mother and baby brother are buried in the Indian Cemetary on River
Mtn Rd (Vernon Mtn)(near Mary Jane Underwood Roberts homestead
property) in Delaware,Logan Co,Ark. Others buried there
(36 or 37 total) are VERNON/BOX/HENDERSON of Indian ancestry.
An archeological dig was begun there in 2000 or 2001."
Another BOX descendant said the they were of Cherokee Indian descent, but
no 'proof' other than family tradition. This is most likely how our
Underwood's and Ragsdale's are part Indian.
I think that the reason none of them enrolled in the Indian rolls is
because of how the Indians were treated back then. I am not sure we will
ever find 'proof' but I will always be looking.

Farris Lawrence in Az, found it in some documents her mother had. We are

I have been to the Graves Cemetery there in Delaware a few years ago. I'm
not sure when the tombstones were placed there or who provided it.
The LDS record provided in 1936 by Nancy Ann Underwood Ragsdale or Thomas
James Ragsdale (son of Nancy)also says he was born in 1810,in
Louisville,Ky. But CW info by Malachi when he joined the Union Army in
1863 gave his age as 45 (born 1818) and Green Co,Ky not Louisville.

One other thing that makes me think he was born later than 1810 was the
info I think that was given in the Logan Co History. It says that he was
a 'young boy' when they moved to Ark. If they were in Mo in the 1830
Census, the earliest they might have moved to Ark would be 1830 or 1831.
If Malachi was born in 1810-1811, he would have been 19-21, not a
'young boy'. If say he was born between 1815-1818, this might be closer
to what one would call a 'young boy', age 12-15. And Ceria's age (16-19)
it' also. Not sure who may have given her age in that 1850 census and that
is the only one she appeared in.

Anyway, we may never completely solve all these mysteries. Just more
'food for thought'. I tend to think maybe the info he provided to the
Army would be more accurate, since it came from him and not from a secondary
source.

Hello there! I am not an avid genealogy researcher. In pecking around, I became interested in what my grandfather Charles Otto Underwood's wife's name was. It was Sarah Parish. To become more inquisitive, if my line is right, which I'm not right often, My grandfather's father was Thomas J. Underwood and his father was Malachi, which would make him my gggrandfather. My grandmother, Rosetta McClain Underwood married Charles Otto Underwood in the early 1900's around Waldron, Scott co., Arkansas. Not sure this is the same connection. I have no other evidence to back it up, but if you have any such information, I would love to hear from you....Thank you....Charles Grant

My grandfather,Thomas James RAGSDALE,was born in Logan Co,Ark in 1880.
His parents were John Benjamin(b.1851 Ark)RAGSDALE and Nancy Ann UNDERWOOD(b.1855 Ark). His paternal grandparents(by LDS records) were Benjamin(b.1824 Tn,maybe Hickman Co)RAGSDALE and Caroline(b.1826 Tn)STOVALL. From other records, I believe that Benjamin's father was William (b.1782 NC) who was next to him in 1850 Johnson Co,Ark. William's line goes back to Godfrey in the 'Elijah Ragsdale' book by Mrs.June Hart Wester.
Thomas married Clara Lee BARNES at Brushy,Sequoyah Co,I.T.(near Sallisaw,Ok) 22Nov 1903 by W.M.Grose, MG(Minister of the Gospel). They lived on the farm (probably in the Sadie community) of William Isaac (Ike) Copeland who had a son named Anderson Copeland. My father Albert Abner Ragsdale was born near 'Tater Hill' (Potato Knob?) about 11 mi southwest of Sallisaw in 1913. The midwife who named him was named Aunt May McGlouthin. (Daddy said Aunt Meg Johnson)
Tom and Clara 'separated' or 'divorced' about 1915. He joined the Army in WW I in 1918 from Groal,Ok(I have not been able to find where this was located-may be Grove?). He served with the 90th Army Division at Ft. Sam Houston,Tx but was never sent overseas as far as I can find.He was in Lamar Co,Tx in 1920,shown as 'divorced'. I have researched county records and written to all nearby counties but there seems to be no record of their 'divorce'.
Tom and his mother Nancy Underwood Ragsdale and sister Louisa Ragsdale Farris and her husband Levander (Van) Farris became members of the Mormon Church in Lamar Co,Tx in 1924.They were in El Paso,Tx in 1930. Tom worked for the WPA there. Nancy and Louisa and Van Farris are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso. Tom died in Jan 1943 and is buried at Ft.Bayard, Silver City,NM.
Clara remarried in Faulkner Co,Ark in 1918 to James Tom POTTS.

Johnnie William Potts

Johnnie William Potts, 74, of Alexander, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.

He was born Aug. 10, 1930, in Lonoke to Jake and Hetti Ragsdale Potts.

Mr. Potts was married for 49 years to Shirley Smith Potts and loved fishing, hunting, wrestling and country music.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Johnnie Wayne Potts and Jimmy Potts; one daughter, Darlene Rodgers; five grandchildren, two great-grandsons; five sisters; one brother-in-law; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ashby Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Potts, Gary Potts, Gene Potts, Ricky Potts, Jesse Potts, Johnnie Rasdon and Tim Rollins.

Greetings............ My name is Don Russell of North Little Rock, AR. I have known your family for most of my life through church. I was visiting your website that showed so much of the Ragsdale history and it brought back great memories.

First....We attend the church in North Little Rock where your website indicates that Bro Al was saved, 1st Assembly of God....which used to be located at 22nd and Franklin. The church is almost 100 years old and now runs about 2200 each Sunday morning in two services and is reaching the world in various ways with the gospel. A wonderful and successful church that blesses our city and state. Rev Gus Hardcastle was the first pastor when the church was meeting in what was known as the "sheepshed" across the street from where the building at 22nd and Franklin stood. Bro Al came along in the late thirties and was riding a bicycle and learning the bible and playing his music for anyone that would listen. I've heard the story many times and there are still folks around that remember him well.

In 1939, Rev J. D. Hardcastle, started a mission church on East Washington Avenue, in North Little Rock. He was saved in 1926, at the 22nd and Franklin church, where his brother, Gus, was pastor. J. D., pastored the East Washington church until his death in 1970 and had fellowshipped with Bro Al over all those years. Bro Al preached 25 or 30 revivals for us during that time and was very instrumental in my family playing guitars and bass fiddles and such. Bro Hardcastle was my step-father and I, with my two brothers, grew up in the church, Full Gospel Temple, which was affiliated with the Pentecostal Church of God. There are folks all over town in the various churches that were influenced by Bro Al's ministry. My mother, Florence Hardcastle, pastored the church until 1976 when she retired. They are both gone now but, Full Gospel Temple, is still serving the community as an outreach to the homeless and continues as a viable church. The church was relocated in the late 60's to the east side of the city on Highway 161 North. The picture that you have on page 80 of the family pictorial history is identified incorrectly. The sign in front of the church says "Full Gospel Temple".   It was located on 423 Washington Ave, North Little Rock, AR and was torn-down for urban renewal purposes in the late 60's. There is a large arena at that location now. And as I said before...your dad was very much a part of that church.

A few year ago I was able to produce a CD from vinyl records that your dad had made for us in the 50's. They were direct record (live cut) albums that would have one song on each side. I sent the CD to your dad and he featured it on several radio programs that he was doing on the local radio station here in central AR. The singers were Sis Hardcastle and Garland and Reba Russell, my brother and his wife.

It has been sometime since I've had an update. Hope all is well with he and your mom.

Your website is full of information and was entertaining as well. I certainly enjoyed going through the past journeys with your family. I ran some of those same paths and saw some of the same sights.

Hi Don,
I have corrected my file to show the church name as Full Gospel Temple. Thanks.
I remember going to the Hardcastle's house after church on Sunday. Mother and Daddy & I went to Little Rock a few years back and tried to find it but we couldn't.
I have added a link on my web site to Daddy's life story book which he published many years ago.
I found a bunch of old vinyl records stored in Daddy's closet. I have copied them to CD and am trying to figure a way to upload them but my web site is limited.
Daddy has started having memory loss a few years ago. I put together the 'Ancestors,Descendants,...'etc for them as a Christmas present. I wasn't sure he would remember much but Mother said he has really enjoyed looking thru it. He has had congestive heart failure for several years now and has to go to the hospital every few months when the pain and coughing gets too bad.
