29. John George Frederick Andrew MILLER
Birth: 12547/1864 NSW BDM
John George Miller spent most of his childhood around the Merriwa and Mudgee areas during his childhood. It is probable that he moved to the Dubbo area prior to his marriage to Grace Martha Chant in 1894. His sister Catherine Rosina married Avengelo Costa and moved to the area after 1879. At the time of marriage to Grace his occupation was Carrier. He had known the Chant family for some time having been interested in Martha's elder twin sisters.
After their marriage in 1894 it appears that John and Martha live in Dubbo for at least two to three years. Their address in Dubbo on the birth of their first child was Fitzroy Street and John's occupation was Carrier. In 1899 at the time of the birth of their second child in Pilliga near Narrabri, Johns occupation was Sawyer and it is probable that he was involved in railway sleeper cutting during this time. By 1902 the family had returned to the Mudgee area where the birth of their third child took place. John's occupation was described as quartz gold miner on the birth certificate and the electoral roll of 1903 places them in the small community of Budgee Budgee via miles north of Mudgee. The family remained here for the next ten years.
It is not known whether John worked as a miner or farmer during these years however by about 1912 the family depart the Mudgee area. Their next place of residence was Binnaway near Coonabarabran where their youngest child is born and John lists his occupation as labourer. It appears that they moved to the Dubbo area shortly after and the electoral roll of 1917 lists them as living on the corner of Wingewarra and Darling streets in Dubbo. Some time prior to 1920 they moved again to Wellington and this was their final place of residence. During 1920 Martha became sick with breast cancer and died on the 20th October 1920 at Warne Street Wellington at the age of 43 years. She is buried alongside her mother in the Roman Catholic section of the Dubbo Cemetery.
It was reported in the Dubbo Liberal newspaper 'Death of Mrs Miller. The death occurred in Wellington hospital on Wednesday of Mrs Miller, wife of Mr J. G. Miller a former resident of Wingewarra Street Dubbo but lately of Wellington. The deceased had been ailing for some time with distressing internal trouble. She had passed middle age , leaves a grown up family, and was a member of the Chant family, well known in the Dubbo district.'
John Miller remained in the Wellington district after his wife's death. He worked as a contractor, mainly in road construction. His sons spent time with their father in the family business and constructed roads in various parts of New South Wales as far afield as the Pacific Highway at Taree. By the 1920s John had bought a number of properties which he rented out in the Yeoval district. John died on the 24th April 1942 at the age of 82 years old, at the Bindawalla private hospital in Wellington after having lived with his son's (Ted Miller) family. He is buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Wellington cemetery.
