(Redin and Marion, below, are the only recorded children of George and Martha Keith McCoy, prior to George's leaving for, and eventual demise in 1865 during the Civil War. By the birth dates we now believe Nancy to be a child of George as well. The whereabouts of Martha at this record remain unknown, although our assumption is that she has passed away by 1880. A search is underway to determine the paternal parentage of Isabella, John and Austin, below)

Remember when this is read that this is a daughter of Francis Marion and Susan Neill. She is writting a recollection. Grandfather George died when Francis Marion was only five years old, so the mistake in the given name of the mother of George is understandable.

My father, Francis Marion McCoy, was born in Tennessee on April 4, 1860. His parents were George Washington and Mary Martha Keith McCoy. His father's mother was Sarah Hatfield McCoy (yes, those Hatfield's and McCoys), and his mother's parents were Austin L. ans malinda Keith, who were some of the original settlers of Gonzales County. They are buried in Leesville.

My father came to visit his Keith grandparents in Gonzales County in 1878. Their son, Nick Keith, had settled in Atascosa County, so "Papa", as we called him, came to visit him, and fell in love with my mother. They were married on Christmas Day in 1895.

My mother, Susan Tiny Neill, was born on September 20, 1872, in Atascosa County, the daughter of Andrew Jackson (Jack) and Dicy Clorinda Neatherlin Neill.

The community where they lived was called Gallinas. My mother taught school in the little one-room Neill Schoolhouse, which was also used for church services. There was an old colored lady called Aunt Sarah Neill who lived on the neill place. She is buried near my great-grandparents in the old Neill Cemetery.

I was born Jettie Belle on February 17, 1901, at Galinas. I was married to B.J. Evans for a short time, and was then married to Mr. Holliman for 35 years, until his death. I now live in San Antonio.

My brother, Clyde irwin (named for the old doctor who delivered us), was born on November 7, 1897, and married Emma Baety. He moved to California in about 1925, where he later died.

Eunice marion was born on April 22, 1903. She was married to St. Elmo McGee of Nixon for 53 years, and died on March 5, 1983.

Gladys was born on November 11, 1905, and married Robert Hickman. She is now living in San Antonio.

My mother died on November 11, 1905, giving birth to Gladys. We three older children were taken to San Antonio to live with Papa's sister, Isabell Carroll. Gladys stayed with our Neill grandparents until their deaths.

I well remember our visits with our Neill grandparents every summer. Once, on nearing their home with a big storm approaching, Grandpa whipped up the horses as we appraoched Galinas Creek, and we could hear the roar. He stopped on a cliff on the other side, and waited for the wall of muddy, foaming water to come down the dry creek bed.
My grandfather was Justice of the Peace at Galinas for many years. I remember him performing weddings in front of his desk and huge fireplace. He kept a diary that is in the possession of a granddaughter, and we have his seal.

My father never remarried, and died fifty years after my mother's death. He died on March 9, 1955. They are buried in the Neill Cemetery that is in the corner of the old Neill pasture. The land was donated by the neills, but is now called the Brite Cemetery, as a Brite was first to be buried there.
