Our McCoy Family Land
Van Buren County Tennessee

As the Civil War raged, John and Nancy Hatfiled McCoy's large family removed from their beloved home in Campbell County in East Tennesse to presumably safer territory in Middle Tennessee in Van Buren County. It remains unknown why the family chose this particular location. Having installed their families in safety, the sons of fighting age returned to East Tennessee. Two were lost during battles. At the close of the war son William and his wife removed to Barren County Kentucky, as did the families of daughters Nancy and her husband Samuel Swindell, and Milley Ann and her husband Redin Smith. Nancy and Samuel would eventually return to the area of Campbell County Tennessee by 1880. Sons Joseph and Nicholas Patterson would eventually join siblings William and Milley Ann in Barren County Kentucky. Records in Barren County Kentucky show us some of the McCoy family activities in that location. However, Joseph and his wife Salina and their growing family remained many years with the McCoy family in Van Buren County Tennessee. Joseph's mother Nancy Hatfield McCoy resided for some years, as noted on the 1880 Van Buren County census.
Below are some records gleaned from the Van Buren County Tennesse Deed books recording some of the transactions of son Joseph McCoy.
