According to a letter held in the Louisa McCoy family shared with me by Lynn Schiller, one day during the Civil War, Union troops arrived at the farm of John and Nancy McCoy. The family was forcebly removed, leaving with only what they could load onto a wagon. This story is born out by the records below, and by the land records found in Campbell Co., Tn. This fateful day would forever change the family.
The sons went then, and joined various units of the Confederate Army. Two sons, Andrew and George, would never return. Joseph was taken prisoner. Little was known about this period in our McCoy family history until we found the records left by three sons. The pensionapplication files of John L. McCoy, Francis Marion McCoy, and the P.O.W. records kept by the Union Army as Joseph was moved from camp to camp, and finally released at the end of the war.
