Edna Weidenhaft (1900-1992), daughter of Sarah Rachel Mauk and Solon Steere, granddaughter of George Mauk and Eliza Sartain, wrote this account of the family history. Interestingly, it is passed on, in this account, that when Eliza and George set out for Kansas c. 1868, George was widowed. However, in the 1870 Barren County Kentucky census we see Elizabeth, his ostensibly deceased first spouse, keeping house with many of their children, and some of their grandchildren, in the home. This writing reveals many day to day experiences of the family as they set up home and family in Kansas.
This narrative comes to us from the collection of:
Jennifer Mauk.
