Obituary of Hester Anna Roby Dunaway

From research of Christine McCormick, Germantown, MD

Sep 2, 1909: Esther Anna Roby was born Mar 5, 1857 in Marion Count, IA and died Aug 27, 1909 at Omaha, NE. She was the oldest child of WIlliam and Mary ROby. On Sep 28, 1872 she was married to James Dunaway. Nine children were born to this union, eight girls and one boy, all of whom are living except one daughter, Lillie F. Honnold who departed this life Dec 15, 1904. All of her children were at her bedside during her illness. Besides her daughters and son, she is survived by a mother and two brothers. She was a patient, loving mother, always ready to sacrifice herself for her loved ones. Everything that medical aid and loving hands could do was done without avail. The remains were brought from Omaha to Rockwell City Satuerday evening. The services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm by Rev. G.W. Coffman. The body was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery. A large number of friends attended the services.

Another one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is still,
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.

Probate Record Calhoun Co., IA January term 1910, District Court of Iowa in and for Calhoun County. Probate 558

From research of Christine McCormick, Germantown, MD

In the matter of Hester A. Dunaway, decd. In Probate.
Your petitioners show that they are the children of Hester A. Dunaway, decd. The said deceased was at the time of her death, a resident of Rockwell City, Calhoun County, IA and that she died intestate on August 27, 1909. That she left surviving no husband, but the following heirs at law to wit:
Libbie Forbes, nee Dunaway; Ella Dyer, nee Dunaway; Margaret Henderson, nee Dunaway; Blanche Rhoads, nee Dunaway; Maude Bailey, nee Dunaway; and Fae Dunaway, all of whom have attained their majority. Also, Bernice Dunaway, 17, and Glenn Dunaway, 14 years of age. That she left the following grandchildren who are minors and the children of her deceased daughter, Lillie Honnold, nee Dunaway, to wit: Harry Honnold, Iva Honnold Long, Hobart Honnold, and Keith Honnold.
The deceased at the time of her death was seized of a house and lot located in Rockwell City, IA and also possessed a household and kitchen furniture of about the value of $100 which is liable to waste unless care be taken of the same by someone authorized by law. There are also claims against the estate which should be paid.
Notes: Note that in the above documents it is inferred that James is deceased, obviously absent. No record of a divorce has been discovered after extensive and diligent research by Christine McCormick, a decendant of James and Hester. The strangment is clear, and it is hypothesized by Christine that this occurred shortly after the untimely death of their daughter Lillie in 1904. Note in the census listings that minor son Glenn does reside with his father in North Dakota less than a year after Hester's death.
