Index to Marriage Licence Bonds 1667-1855
For churches, several methods existed to ensure that there was no impediment to a marriage. The first, the Marriage Banns, involved the reading, or posting, of an announcement of the intention of a couple to marry. The Banns effectively gave 3 weeks public notice of the impending marriage so any objections and were read in the parish church of each of the marrying couple. Alternatively, a Marriage Licence could be obtained (prior to 1858) from the Ecclesiastical Court by entering a bond with the bishop of the diocese. This payment was given as surety to indemnify the church against any damaged that may be sought later as result of any unforeseen impediment to the marriage. The original Diocescan and Prerogative Court Marriage Licence Bonds were all destroyed in 1992, but the indexed to the bonds lodged have survived. I have examined the indexes to the Prerogative Court Marriage Licence Bonds, and those covering the following dioceses only. The Dublin marriage license bonds are listed amongst the indexes for Original Wills and Grant Books of Diocese of Dublin.
