The Hearth Money Rolls

A tax of two shillings per hearth or fireplace was levied half yearly by the sheriff of each county in Ireland from 1663, on the basis of lists of the names of householders compiled by local justices of the peace. The original rolls were destroyed in a fire in the Four Courts in Dublin in 1922, but copies of the rolls survive for most of the counties of Ulster, for counties Louth, Westmeath, Dublin, Kilkenny, and Wicklow in the province of Leinster and counties Sligo and Tipperary. They list the number of hearths in each house, the householder’s name and are arranged by barony and parish. The tax was collected over areas known as Walks and based on the town. The Lisburn Walk, for example, covered a large area of the south of County Antrim and not merely Lisburn town. The rolls seem to be quite comprehensive and typed transcripts are available at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland: an index is also available on the Public Search Room selves and covers the Counties of Antrim (1669), Londonderry (1663) and Tyrone (1666). The rolls for County Antrim have been published in Trevor Charlton's Heads and Hearths: The Hearth Money Rolls for County Antrim 1666-69. Unless indicated, the following list of householders paid tax for only one hearth.
