INDEX OF GENEALOGICAL SOURCES
Unless you're one of the lucky few who can visit the Family Records Centre in London regularly, consulting useful sources like the St Catherine's (BMD) Index, or the national index of wills after 1858, can be a problem. This section aims to list, for every UK county, records offices and libraries which keep a copy of these indexes.
NB. After starting this list I was informed that there is already a list of locations for the BMD index on line. Follow this link to access it. I will still put the information on this page, however - sometimes with additional information such as whether film or fiche, etc.
I am also compiling a list of which censuses have been indexed, and whether the index is a full one (ie full name and age), surname only, or selected parishes only. This may be helpful to people wanting to request lookups on genealogy newsgroups, since if no index exists a lookup request is much less likely to be responded to.
As you can see, this index is very limited at the moment. In order to make it as useful as possible I need input from other people. So if you know of a record office or library that has either the St Catherine's Index or the National Wills Index, or you can tell me the nature of the census indexes for any county, please e mail me with the details at
