Alan Bednall The Bednall Archives 09/Aug/2002:15:58:50
I liked your site very much and found it easy to use. The family I
sought (that of Joseph Bednall who was removed to Stanley in 1784) has
left few traces (just one name) but your site enabled me to exclude the
possibility that other branches of his family (Grundy, Brentnall and
Neil) had settled there. Many thanks for all the good work you have
done!

Excellent informative friendly site.I am interested in finding my great
grandfather Walker RILEY who was born in Ilkeston in 1841 and married
Betsy Wain at Cotmanhay Parrish Church on 29th January 1863.At the time
of his marriage he was resident in Shipley. His father was William
RILEY.I was interested if there was any connection with the RILEYS of
Stanley?Thanks. Keith McGraw

What a fantastic site - I never expected to come across anything like
the amount of information that can be accessed. My interest in the
peoples of Stanley was generated when my father gave me the Lee booklet
recently. In there is a mention of a relative, "Old Ned" Stevens -
although my father was unclear about the actual relationship with
Ned.It was known that my paternal grandmother lived in Stanley for some
part of her childhood but this was rarely talked about as her own
mother had left her and two older siblings to, it was rumoured, pursue
a career on the stage. I should imagine that this was quite a
scandalous event for the village. From the census information I have
established the year of my great-grandmother's birth, the names of my
great-great grandparents and all of their offspring. The would-be music
hall singer was named Eliza Dexter (nee Stevens) and left her husband
and children for the stage between 1897 (when my grandmother, Annie
Mary Dexter was born) and 1901 wh

Your site was recommended to me as my great great grandfather, Robert
Cowley, married an Elizabeth Bloor on 1/4/1844 in Kirk Hallam.
Robert was born in West Hallam and christened in Breadsall on 12/7/1822.
Elizabeth was christened in Dale Abbey on 18/8/1822.
Elizabeth's parents were William and Elizabeth Bloor, living at 'Cat
and Fiddle'.
Elizabeth (daughter) had at least 2 sisters, Rachel (older) and
Caroline (younger). Mother Elizabeth died on 21/6/1825 (the same day as
the birth of Caroline) and William, who remarried a Hart lady, died age
89 on 10/4/1873.
Robert and Elizabeth emigrated to South Africa in 1847 where they both
died (Robert 2/5/1905 and Elizabeth 6/5/1876).
I live in South Africa.
Hope this is of some interest and help in your searches. Let me know if
you have anything of interest to myself.

I was born in Stanley at the home of my grandparents Ernie and Hilda
Thompson 5, Morley Lane, Stanley. I have just begun tracing my family
tree and have found this web site extremely helpful. I would like to
hear from anyone who has any connections with the
Thompson/Cotton/Marson families. Thankyou for an interesting and
informative web site.

I was informed of your site by my friend and contributor to your site
June Johnson.

I have lived with my family in Stanley village since 1986.And I am
still discovering new aspects and interesting tales/information about
the locality.

Whilst I have no immediates relatives or geneology links to the village
prior to my family coming to the village, I did enjoy viewing your site
pictures of how the village used to look in the 1940's and how it has
subsequently changed over time.

Would love to see more pictures on your site of the village in the
early 1900's from different angles/parts of the village.

Keep up the good work and who knows in time even my family may even
feature in the village ancestory/history when your site history grows
to cover the latter part of the century!!!

I have spent many happy hours in this village with my grandma, aunties,
uncles and cousins. They have all either passed over or moved but I
still make visits there.
Alan I love your site and I hope it continues to grow, I will return to
it many many times.
Congratulations and Best Wishes for the future.
