STANLEY'S LOSS
DEATH OF MR THOMAS HARTSHORN
Stanley mourns the loss of a well known and respected parishioner, Mr Thomas Hartshorn, who died at his home, Abbey Cottage, 22 Station Road, Stanley, during Easter Sunday night, aged 66 years. Mr Hartshorn, who was born in Stanley, commenced his working life in the offices of Stanley Kilburn Colliery Co, later joining the office staff at Mapperley Colliery where he became chief clerk, prior to NCB centralisation, after which he was transferred to Stanley Colliery office, until his retirement several months ago.
A central figure in most of the village activities and social life, he was a life-long member of St Andrew's Church, in which he displayed great interest and affection, also representing that body on the Board of School Managers.
Being the possessor of a rich deep voice, Mr Hartshorn's services were for many years in great demand during Sunday School anniversaries in the district, and by carol singing parties at Christmas.
For many years he also was keenly interested in sport, and in turn became chairman of Stanley United FC and St Andrew's CC.
Cremation at Wilford Hill, Nottingham, followed by a service in St Andrew's Church, Stanley.
