HARTS AND HARTSHORNS OF STANLEY, DERBYSHIRE, 1726 - 1995

NB. These two surnames appear to be variants of the same one. Some individuals, particularly in the period 1800 to 1850, were baptised with one variant and married or buried with the other. Some families even baptised some of their children as Hart and others as Hartshorn. This is the reason I have grouped the two surnames together in one document.

This document was compiled by Alan Bloor from microfilms of the parish registers of Stanley, kept at the Derbyshire Records Office in Matlock, and, for burials 1813 - 1851 only, Bishops' Transcripts (microfilm owned by the LDS Church, original BTs kept at Lichfield Records Office). The original burial records for Stanley covering the years 1813 to 1901 were destroyed in a fire without being filmed - therefore no burials are available at all between 1852 and 1901, though I have added in a few memorial inscriptions from Stanley Churchyard to partially fill in the gaps.

Baptisms have been organised into what I believe to be family groups (based on parents' names). Marriages and burials are listed separately in chronological order.

I have not placed any interpretion on the data, apart from arranging the baptisms into families, but I do know from my own research that some of the families listed separately are in fact the same family eg. family nos. 53 and 55 are the same, also family nos. 65 and 73. Furthermore the Joseph in these four families is the same person (two marriages). It is also obvious that some of the other families can be "paired up" by assuming that HART and HARTSHORN were used interchangeably.

Please note that although I have taken every care in transcribing the records, I cannot guarantee 100% freedom from error in transcription or interpreting the writing.

Note also that there were Harts and Hartshorns living in adjacent parishes (particularly West Hallam) who may be related to those in Stanley.
