DIRECTORY LISTINGS FOR JAMES BARTON CLAY

Three references to James Barton CLAY, bootmaker and shoemaker, have been found in local directories :

1) 1835 Pigot's Directory - CLAY Barton (Coldwell Street, Wirksworth)

2) 1850 Slater's Directory - Wharton CLAY (Field Row, Belper)

3) 1860 Harrison's Directory - BARTON, James Clay (High Pavement, Belper)

Examination of the census returns have shown that reference 2 is to the father, and reference 3 to the son. The reference to Wharton Clay I believe to be a misprint - perhaps James couldn't write and the compiler misheard him when he gave his name??
