The SPENCER family of Chippenham, WIL

The men of the Spencer family of Chippenham, WIL have been involved in medicine since the late 1700s and possibly before that. I have been unable to determine the parents of Thomas, the earliest SPENCER in this tree, so if you are able to offer any guidance I would love to hear from you – contact me. Thomas Spencer had a considerable amount of land at the time of his death in Tytherton Lucas, Kington St Michael and other places and there is a definite connection with Langly and Kington Burrell. The family appears to have predominantly used St Nicholas’ Hardenhuish for burials at least. A photo of the burial monument of Thomas, his wife Alice and their children who died in childhood can be found here.

Dr Thomas SPENCER practiced in the market place at Chippenham, WIL. The building is still standing and, although divided into 2, part of it currently houses the Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre, next door to The Bear pub. His sons Henry and then Francis continued to practice here until their respective deaths. Following Francis’ death in 1894, his son-in-law William Thomas Briscoe practiced there for some time.
