Akin
Family History
The
Descendants of David Akin of Newport, RI
Presented
by Robert Larry Akin
David
Akin is known to have been in Newport, Rhode Island as early as 1662.
He is
believed to have been the husband of Mary Akin of Portsmouth, RI who
purchased
land in 1671. They began one line of the Akin Family much of which is
documented here. This material has been gathered from many sources over
a
decade or so of work, and I thank everyone who has made a contribution.
I have
tried to source this material to the extent that I can, but much work
remains -
particularly in verifying some of the research from others who did not
document
their sources. I apologize if I have not given proper credit
to
someone. It was certainly unintentional.
The
following link is
to the GEDCOM file on Rootsweb WorldConnect where you can navigate
around the
file in various ways. In addition, below are links
to other
historical information on this family. I have solved the problem of
people
stealing this information. I am making it freely available to anyone
for
downloading. You cannot steal what I give away. My only hope is that
you will
find it useful. One favor I would ask. If you find errors or can add
information to this family history, please contact me at the address
below. With your help, we have not surpassed 33,700 names in the Akin Family Database.

Update:
- Brian Johnson has provided to me a large amount of new and updated information on the Rogers, Haviland, and related families. These families connect to the Akin family tree through descendants of Hannah Akin, a daughter of David and Sarah (Allen) Akin of Quaker Hill, Dutchess, NY. Thanks, Brian.
- Terry Akin and Karen Kelley continue to work on documenting the Akin family tombstones at www.FindAGrave.com. This past month, Karen surveyed the Allen's Neck Cemetery south of Westport, Bristol, MA just off Horseneck Road where a number of Akin related families were buried. She also surveyed the Padanaram Cemetery in South Dartmouth, Bristol, MA. This cemetery is very near the Dartmouth farm of Captain John Akin whose will is the backdrop of this web page. The third cemetery that Karen surveyed was the Tallman Farm Cemetery near Schuyler, Herkimer, NY. This cemetry was in very poor shape with vines and brambles making the survey very difficult. Karen rescued some of the stones that had fallen over and did a great job under very difficult conditions. She even got some poison ivy to remember the experience with. Thanks, Karen. We all owe you a lot. After each survey, Terry Akin then has to take all of the data, make sense out of it, figure out how the people connect to the family tree, and then upload the data to the FindAGrave website. Many hours are spent in this endeavor, and all Akin family members should be grateful to Terry for all of his work.
- The other updates to the database this month were scattered updates and additions to various parts of the database brought about by email contributors (you know who your are, and THANKS), and by my own personal research.
