We get a little glimpse into the life of Mattie and George from this narrative by Dylan Hutchins (written in May 1999):
"He had siblings: Willie, Harlan, Dodge, and others I can't remember. Uncle George converted to become a 7th Day Adventist and Aunt Mattie converted after they married. Uncle George was the barber and the undertaker (that's the way it was then). Aunt Mattie was a wonderful cook, and owned a bakery. (And an immaculate housekeeper! I was helping her mow the lawn once, when I was little, and, after PUSHING the old pushmower to CUT the grass, (you know, the kind WITHOUT any kind of engine!!!) she took a broom and methodically SWEPT the lawn to remove all the grass clippings!!!) She was a good enough business woman even in the Depression to keep a business going and frugal enough to be the family banker. Poor people couldn't get loans from banks in those days, so Aunt Mattie financed all the cars, houses and emergencies for the whole extended family - at 10 percent interest! Uncle George and Aunt Mattie lived mostly in Keene, Tx (a totally Adventist town) in Johnson County - just south of Fort Worth. Adventists settled Keene to get away from "worldly" people and set up their own schools, (including a college), hospital and community. Education is important in the Adventist religion, and everyone does at least one year of missionary work abroad, so people are pretty well travelled, for a little town. The only "honored" professions are medical, teaching, or missionary work. Sabbath is sun-down Friday to sun-down Saturday. And they are vegetarian. To this day you cannot buy coffee, tea, cigarettes, cokes, or meat in Keene!!! (We ate veggie burgers BEFORE they were cool!) No dancing, make-up, jewelry, or nonsense. No comic books, movies, or card playing. Want to come visit?(At this point none of the family LIVE there anymore, although several are buried there, including my grand-mother, Lola Bertha Vinson Gill Smith)
