  • she just got left off the census completely (which I have seen happen)
    --on the family of Calvin Vinson next door, the son, Meridith, age 9, was also left off
  • she was visiting or living with another family and got listed with them
  • she came to live with Jesse and Lizzie (Drew) Vinson AFTER the 1860 census was taken

  *For now until we find anything to prove otherwise, we're going to go with the first or second possiblity and continue to look for her on the 1860 census.

  "This picture was taken between 1900 and 1905 and is the William Marion Martin/ Tobitha Paralee Vinson family. The two oldest children are not pictured here because they were already married and out of the house. This was taken in Tishomingo Co., MS. and was taken during a school picture taking session when the family evidently dressed and had a family photo taken. The two children not pictured are: William Lee Martin and Fannie Elizabeth Martin Wright.

  The date is estimated by using my grandmother, Hattie Martin Johnson's age. She was born 1894 and appears to be about 8-10 yrs. of age here. She is the youngest child seated between her parents on the front row.

  Martin Family

  When Tobitha married into the Martin family, she wasn't alone. She had three sisters who married brothers of William Marion Martin. William Martin was born May 5, 1848 in Tishomingo County, Mississipi and died March 22, 1920 Tishomingo Co., Mississippi. He was buried next to Tobitha at North Cross Roads Baptist Chruch Cemetery, Tishomingo Co, MS.

  William was the son of Henry Martin who was born about 1812 in North Carolina and his wife, Fanie Harp, who was born about 1814 in North Carolina. Henry Martin was the son of Ambrose Martin and Rebecca Redding who married November 6, 1809 Wilkes County, North Carolina.
