• 1847 - Birth and Background

  James Edward Vinson was the son of Jesse R. Vinson and Elizabeth 'Lizza' Drew. He was born just shortly after his parents arrived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Like many in our Vinson family, James was a twin, having a twin sister, Tobitha Paralee 'Bitha' 'Celia' Vinson.

Move to Texas

Following is from research of Don Pierce (May 1999)

"When James T. Vinson and his family first went to Texas, they were in Bell And Fall Counties, which are adjacent to each other. James and wife Caledonia lived in Bell Co. and sons John and Will lived in Falls Co. and Will's eldest daughter Mary remembered going to visit them in a covered wagon. Will's first wife is buried in Lott, TX in Falls Co. Then at some point they all wound up in Coleman, Co. But in 1902, Will, John and Edward moved to what was then Indian Territory, and Edward's son Autrey and John's son Homer were born there. They evidently didn't find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow there and by the time my mother was born in 1907, they were in Coleman Co., Texas. Autrey was born in Checotah so that is over in Eastern Okla., whereas Mangum is in the Southwest part of the state"

Martha Caledonia 'Cal' McGehee was born September 10, 1847. She was the daughter of Edward N. McGehee and Mary Elizabeth Tankersley who married Decmeber 13, 1842 in South Carolina. By 1860, Mary was already a widow and as you can see on the 1870 and 1880 census, above, and the photograph, above, Mary lived with her daughter, Caldedonia and James Thomas Vinson.
