Research of Houston S. Foster
What happened to Susan Antoinette had been a mystery for a long time. Some said she moved to TN but I found no evidence of this. Her children were all born in GA so it is unlikely that she ever went to TN.... She had 5 children but only 3 are listed in the census, the other children must have died young. Apparently neither of her sons ever married, her daughter married and had one child named Rufus who died in 1929. I don't think Rufus ever married. Rufus said in his WW1 draft registration that his mother, Mary, was his nearest relative and stated that she lived in Macon. With the death of Mary and her son, Rufus, this family apparently died out.
I can understand how so many researchers had missed her, I searched many days over a period of 16 years before I was able to find what had happened to her. She left Harris County and by 1880 she was in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. She remained in Atlana for about 30 years then moved to Columbus, Georgia and was enumerated there in the 1910 census. Both of her sons worked as plow makers. My brother Hershell and I tracked them for many years using the Atlanta City Directory when we visited the Georgia Archives in Atlanta.
The 1894 City Atlanta Directory lists Susan A. as "S. A. Booker wd. William resides at 84 McAfee, Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA. Susan's son Frank was listed at 313 Frazer St. Atlanta, GA. Susan A. Foster died in Columbus, Georgia and she is buried in a family plot with her daughter Mary (Mollie), her son Franklin, her grandson Rufus Autry, her son-in-law Thomas J. Autry, and Thomas's mother and father R. A. and Mary Autry. Her other son, John T., is buried in Atlanta. Susan Antoinette Foster does not have any living descendants.
Regarding William:
William Booker lived through the war and was administrator of Amy (Edwards) Foster's estate. Though Amy died in July 1859, her estate was not settled until after the war. It is believed that William Booked died between 1866-1870. Do not know where he is buried. His brothers were officers and I am sure he was also. They were plantation overseers.
Book H, p. 47--Amy Foster, guardian of Susan A., John E., Asa M., Frances J. Foster, orphans of Francis Foster; made return for l850, mentioning Negroes received from John Edwards, former guardian of said orphans. (Negroes: Violet, Catto, Nelly, Henry, & Mary)
Book B, p.295-Benj. F. Foster, orphan of Francis Foster, now l4 years old, selected John Edwards as his guardian. Other orphans of Francis Foster, under l4 years of age: Elizabeth, John, Asa, Frances & Antoinette.Benj. Johnson posted bond.
