George became a school trustee and for one term, a Lee County Commissioner. Other children came along - Louise, George, Jeannie Clyde,James, Blanche and Marion, - their home was enlarged and the family was deeply involved in island affairs. It was the 1910 hurrican which brought them financial disaster. The family survived the storm in their packing house, the little children tucked into the vegetable bins, but the gardens were a total loss.
George Riddle tried washing the salt from the soil but never again was he able to raise good crops on his land. In 1914, he gave up trying and moved the family, via a Cooper boat, to Ft. Myers. Mrs. Riddle died in 1923, her husband in 1946 and none of the family ever returned to live on Sanibel.

George Riddle came to Sanibel with his father, James, in 1895, after the Great Freeze had destroyed their groves in Umatilla, FL. They bought 80 acres of land along Casa Ybel Road and planted it in vegetables and citrus. James Riddle left the island two years later, but his son stayed on, built a house for his wife, Clyde, and two small daughters, Florette and Irene. He bought 40 more acres on Tarpon Bay Road and by 1904, had a store there.
