Will of father, John Edwards". . . I give and bequeath to my daughter, Mariah Edwards, two negro girls, one by the name of Lucy and the other Mary. I also give and bequeath to my daughter, Amy Foster, one negro woman by the name of Old Cate. I also give and bequeath to my son, Benjamin Edwards, at my death, two hundred dollars in cash, and in twelve months thereafter two hundred dollars in cash, and in twelve months thereafter two hundred dollars in cash, making eight hundred dollars to be paid in four annual installments by my executors.
Third: I give and bequeath to my daughter, Mary Landers, and her husband, Luke Landers, the sum of five dollars and no more. I also give and bequeath to my son, Asa Edwards, the sum of five dollars and no more; the two above mentioned bequests of five dollars each, to be in full of their share of my estate hereinafter to be receivable by the persons respectfully named and mentioned in this clause of my will; And to this end, my views and feelings may not be mistaken and this, my last will and testament, may, hereafter, in some degree explain itself, I wish to here mention, as my reason for making the two above triflicing bequests: some years agao, my son-in-law, Luke Landers, by the assistance of others, conveyed away apart of my negroes in the night as his own property without leave or approbation on my part, and the above named, Asa Edwards, took part with them against me. That showed, as I thought, little regard for me or my interest or feelings and put me to much cost and trouble. Yet, without feeling aught of ill will or resentment toward those of my children already mentioned to whom with paternal affection I wish and devise all goods."
