Per T. H. 'Hugh' Edwards - March 1968
"Great Grandfather Edwards was born in Lincoln Co, GA. He left home when he was only fourteen years old because his stepmother was not good to him-Aunt Sudie's phrasing was that she was mean to him. Aunt Sudie also relates: 'I've heard your great grandfather tell of his first marriage and when he came out to Harris Co, GA, and settled his first sixty acres of land; how he arrived there on Saturday night and the first shelter he ever made for himself he made it on Sunday; how he cleared his land and lived among the Indians. (The Indians were cleared out in 1832)""Before great grandfather Edwards settled on his land in Harris Co., he had been an overseer on the plantation of Peter Holloway. Peter Holloway and his wife, Fannie Dawson, and children had immigrated from South Carolina to Upson Co.,, Georgia. Abi's father gave her two negroes - Mammy (Sylvia) and Uncle Isaac - at her marriage."

"John Edwards (her great grandfather) migrated to Harris Co, GA; to Coosa Co., Alabama in 1862 (the part that is now Elmore Co.,). The trip took 8 days. (Jan 1- Jan 8); brought entire family, household effects, animals, plus 25-30 slaves. Asa H. Edwards had preceeded the family to build a house for them. John Edwards' plantation lay between Weoka Creek and the Coosa River. He was a non-seccionist during the Civil War and a Republican afterwards, and his affiliations caused the establishment of Friendship Church (near Titus, Ala) for which he gave the land. Sometime after the Civil War, John Edwards was elected to the Alabama State Legislature. Joseph Bludworth Hannon was a State Legislator in 1873."

From Grandson, Jim Mullins
My grandfather John James Stoker was County Judge in Foard Co 1896-1899. Then moved to Weatherford.
J.J. Stoker went to the 1938 Civil War reunion (both northern and southern troops - 1400 north and 400 south. The 1938 meeting was the "Last" Reunion, attended by FDR and others. We have the original official invitation. He was 97 at the time; died the next year. He traveled around Texas and all over going to Confederate reunions. I am weak on details, but he went, traveled and shook hands with his one hard.

James Mullin writes:We estimate date in various ways, including guess that Ruth and Esther were 13.Older lady in center is Annie Viola Stoker (Carmichael) - child of JJStoker's first marriage. She is lady who was born 1866 in Hill County Texas shortly after JJ and first wife Emma came to Texas. She, Annie, lived a long time - maybe 80 or more when she died. The first wife, Emma, died not long after marriage. JJ Stoker then returned (fairly soon) to Alabama, stayed there a while, met and married his 2nd wife Sarah Crook and returned to Hill County.
In the photo, Ruth is on bottom right, Esther (my mother) to my left or Ruth's right. Four girls in back (grouped around Annie V.) are Clara, Aunt Margie, Frances and Sula.
The oldest of Sarah's children was James Allen Stoker born 1880; known as brother. He is not in photo. Had been working in SE Texas on railroad and probably had already "gone west" to work first in Oregon area (railroad and/or meat packing) and then Los Angeles area. He was in LA in 1910 census. He married in 1909 in Idaho where Irene grew up (i think) and had chldren in 1910 (James/Jamie) and 1918 (Mary Stoker Toohey).
