BACKGROUND

Thena Davis and Elijah Tramel about 1920

Cabin in TN
Courtesty of Ron Nelson

Taken 1972, House where Thena and Elijah lived when first marriage and where first two children born

Thena Davis was born in District 12 of DeKalb Co., TN to Thomas Jasper Davis and Delia A. Lawrence. Her mother died just before Thena's 14th birthday. She married Elijah Tramel on December 28, 1882 in DeKalb Co., TN. They were married by W. J. Caplinger, J.P.

This picture, taken in 1972 by Vennie (Tramel) Nelson, shows the cabin where Thena and Elijah lived after their marriage in Tennessee. Their first two children would have been born in here.

Graves of Thena and Elijah Tramel at Prairie Point Cemetery

Around 1887, she and Elijah moved to Texas where their third child was stillborn in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co., Texas. They continued on south and settled in Navarro County by mid 1889. The picture on the right of Thena and Elijah was taken about 1920 and was sent to me by Vennie (Tramel) Nelson.

Elijah died in 1938 and Thena died in 1945. Both are buried at Prairie Point Cemetery, at Bazette, Navarro Co., Texas. Many of their children and grandchildren are also buried here. Every year in July there is a big pot-luck pinic with games to raise money for the the upkeep of this cemetery. As a child, I would look forward every year to this event. If anyone needs a lookup in this cemetery book, I will be happy to do so.

Special Thanks to Vennie (Tramel) Nelson and Thelma (Pike) Crowley for all of their help around 1970 in researching the Tramel cousins.

TRAMEL FAMILY

Elijah Tramel was born November 24, 1860 to William Harrison Tramel and Mary Jane Hullett who had married July 18, 1856 in DeKalb Co. TN.

Bible Record of William Harrison Tramel

William Harrison Tramel was a civil wat veteran - Corpl., Company K, lst Reg/t Middle Tenn, Calvary. He enlisted May 3, 1863 at Carthage, Tennessee under Lt. Bass for a period of 3 years. This organization later became Co. K, 5th Reg't Tenn Calvary. He was discharged Aug 14, 1865 at Pulaski, Tennessee. Was promoted from Corpl. to Sergeant on June 27, 1864 by Reg't Order #18. After Mary Jane Hullett died, William Harrison Tramel married Louisa Elizabeth McIntire on Oct 1, 1865 in Dowelltown, DeKalb Co. TN. Louisa was a cousin of mine on the Page side - d/o James G. McIntire and Mahala Page and gd/o Barnabas Page and Mary Allen, my direct ancestors. After William Harrison Tramel died in 1889 in Capling, DeKalb Co., TN, Louisa (McIntire) Tramel and several of her children came to Texas and settled near Thena (Davis) and Elijah Tramel. In fact at this time, many were migrating from DeKalb Co., TN area to Texas. It was a popular destination as you can see from reading the issues of the Liberty Herald for this time period.
