BACKGROUND

Robert and Handy Davis with children Robert Davis and Handy Page were both born in DeKalb Co., TN and this is where they spent their childhood and eventually married on August 21, 1890. He was 22 1/2 and she was 18. Their first child, Fealie Davis, died at age 8 months and was buried at the Pisgah Cemetery along side his many Davis ancestors.

In 1897, probably shortly after the death of his father, Thomas Jasper Davis, Robert and Handy, like many other DeKalb Co., TN families migrated to Texas. They settled at a very small community called Bazette, post office was at Kerens, in Navarro County, Texas. Robert's sister, Thena (Davis) Tramel had settled here ten years earlier. Also, several of the half siblings of Handy had already settled in Texas.

In February 1920, we find Robert and Handy living in Navarro County, Texas on the Powell to Bazette Road. What I find most fascinating about this census, is that my other great grandparents, Granville Lafayette Vinson and Eliza Evaline (Ledbetter) are living right next door. There is no question now about how my grandparents, 'Bennie', shown as age 15 on this census (though should be 17), and Edna Vinson, age 13 met. They were next door neighbors. The marriage would take place six years later on November 28, 1926 in Coolidge, Limestone Co., Texas.

Today, most of the Robert Davis homestead is covered with the waters of Cedar Creek Lake. What was left was divided into plots and lots were drawn by the descendants. Even today, there are descendants living at Cherokee Landing, Tom's Acres, etc - two of the several lots that became the Davis heirs.

Robert and Handy's family, along with the family of Thena (Davis) Tramel are buried at the Prairie Point Cemetery at Bazette. Their tombstone pictures, below, were sent to me by Melba Love, a descendant of Thenia (Davis) Tramel.

Every July, a pot luck picnic is held with fellowship, games, and various entertainment to help support the cleanup of the cemetery. As a young girl, I really used to look forward to these gatherings - meeting the kinfolk and especially the delicious food. I always remember someone taking me out to see the graves of Robert and Handy and the other Davis/Tramel cousins. One day, I said to myself, Who were these people and I decided to find out. I used to see the baby's graves and ask about them. Usually someone would be there in their 'private world' and I would be told to leave them alone. At other graves, you would see flowers being put out and/or someone there with a hoe or planting a bush. At these you would usually see an 'older cousin' who was more than willing to tell you about their parent, brother or sister.

Someone would usually stop at the Coriscana bakery and pick up some goodies! That bakery is known world wide for its famous fruit cakes. And my Aunt Ethel (Davis) Ross could make the best biscuits that I have ever tasted. You never needed an invitation to visit her and within an hour you knew that you would smell the frest aroma of those biscuits. And Uncle Friend, well he always had a joke for you and like his name, was a read friend to his nieces and nephews.
