I have to dedicate this page to Carrel Dutt, a descendant of Tellie's, who I frequently corresponded with back in the 1970's. It is her encouragement and determination (especially with the various spellings of this last name), that kept me interested in finding our Davis heritage. Also, a special thank you to Tommy Webb, historian of Dekalb Co.,TN, who helped us both in our endeavor at this time.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Telitha B. 'Tellie' Davis was born Feb 23, 1827 in Smith Co., TN, the d/o Solomon Davis and his first wife, Sarah L. Pistole. On Decmeber 26, 1848, at the age of 21, Tellie married Thomas S. Priday Jr. Thomas, who was 25, was a recent widower with two small children - 1) William who had just turned two and 2) Sarah Jane who had just turned one. So from the beginning, Tellie had a ready-made family and was an instant mother. But with several younger siblings and having lost her own mother at the age of 8 1/2, she was well-equipped.

PRIDAY FAMILY

The spelling of the last name has been found as Priday, Priddy,Prida, and in earlier records as Friday. His civil war records give the spelling as Priday. In one old family Bible, the spelling is Priddy. The tombstone records for Thomas and Tellie list them as Priddy. However, one of their sons, James and his descendants, used the Priday spelling.
Thomas Prida Sr., born about 1784, is shown on the 1840 DeKalb Co., TN census in District 11. There was a total of ten people in the household with 4 in agriculture and no slaves. In 1850, he is shown in Wilson County, Tennessee Census.

OLD THOMAS PRIDA HOMEPLACE

In a letter from Carrel J. Dutt, dated September 8, 1973, she writes to me:

"Sometime ago ago you had mentioned that Solomon Davis's (his second wife,Anna Kelly) Davis were buried at Pisgah. We had no trouble reaching Pisgah, after a few simple directions. . .
To go to the old Thos Prida farm, one takes the same road out of Dowelltown, and instead of going around to the right, we turned at the left road, which pointed to Cooper's Chapel. . . . We knew that the old Priday farm touched on the northeast corner on Dismal Creek, and other than birch and beech threes, etc, we had nothing to go on. At the courthouse, I just could not find any owners (in the late 1800's) who had it after Henry Hayse . . . (Hayes had bought the 30 acres from Priday in 1850) so, the second day out there, I had decided that we would drive the whole length of Dismal Creek (after I had found a topography map, and a county employee, who knew areas all around there had marked the length of the creek) .. anyway, I had thought I could tell my mother that we had driven the length (the roads over that way weren't even as good as the ones to Pisgah) to Dismal, at least. Well we met a car with a man and his son in it,, and was asking questions about where Dismal ran out and he said that it on to the top of the hill (or ridge, beyond us). Anyway, we started discussing about our Priday ancestor etc., but I had never told him a thing about the number of acres in the old frm, but he asked, "Is that the old Tom Hayse place; my family bought it from him! I had been led to believe that since I couldn't find a deed on later transactions, that it may have been an heir, and sure enough, Tom was a son of Henry Hayse, I had verified later. Anyway, Mr. Rowland said that there was 30 acres in that parcel. . . I knew that tht we had found the farm! . . ."

MOVE TO MISSOURI

Sometime between 1853 and 1856, Tellie and her family moved to Coldwater in Madison County, Missouri where they farmed.
When the civil war started, Thomas joined Co. C, Jeffer's Regt, Mo Cavalry.

DEATH and BURIAL

Thomas and Tellie attended the New Trace Creek Baptist Church in Bollinger County, Missouri and they are buried at the cemetery there. In the picture, below, it can be seen at the back of the church and to the right. These pictures were taken by in the Fall of 2004.
