November 1836 - DeKalb Co., TN Deed Book D, pp. 25-26

"JOSEPH DAVIS to Solomon DAVIS 62 1/2 acres on Hannah's Branch."

Oct Term 1836 - Cannon Co., TN Court Minutes Book A 1836-1841

"John DAVIS represents to the court that one Elijah DUNCAN of this county is very much in the decline of life and impaired in mind and in his opinion incapable of taking care of his person or estate; the court ordered that the sheriff summon a jury of 12 men to ascertain from the best means in their power the true state and condition of said Duncan and report to the present term of this court; which being done, the jury of inquist reports as follows: the undersigned after hearing all the testimony in our power to collect, believe that said Duncan is incapable of either taking care of his person or property; we also understand from the witnesses that the said Duncan has the following property, that is to say, about four acres of corn, one horse, 6 head of cattle and between 20 and 30 head of sheep, some 15 or 20 head of hogs, two beds and some other household furniture, and 124 (last number in fold of book) acres of land, /s/ Joseph CLARK, David D. HIPP, Jacob BERGER, Moses CUMMINGS, John EDDINGS, William F. GEORGE, Arthur WARREN, Thos. CAVATT, Daniel M. STEWART, James SMITH, and Robert BAILEY, jury of inquest. Whereupon the court ordered that JOHN DAVIS be appointed guardian of the said Elijah DUNCAN with power to sell (by Giving the legal notice) the whole or so much of the perishable property of said Duncan as he thinks necessary; whereupon the said JOHN DAVIS together with his securities Soloman DAVIS and JOSEPH DAVIS, gave bond for $1,000."

September 25, 1838 - Smith Co, TN Will Records 1838-54

"JOSEPH DAVIS and Saml VANOVER signed their marks as witnesses to the will of William Laurance/Lawrence"

January 7, 1840 - Smith Co., TN Will Records 1838-54 (will proved)

"State of Tennessee DeKalb County, Tennessee Term l840 on motion the last will and testament of William LAWRENCE, Dec'd. was presented in open court of probate and was duly proved in open court by the oath of Joseph DAVIS and Samuel VANOVER subscribing witnesses thereunto who being first sworn deposed and said that they were acquainted with William LAWRENCE the testator and that they signed the within will his presents by his request and Pharis LAWRENCE, Thomas LAWRENCE and Lewis LAWRENCE executors named in said will came forward and qualified as executors in open court and entered into bond together with Giles DRIVER and Abner SELF their securities approved by the Court in the penal sum of two thousand four hundred dollars, conditioned in court and on motion ordered that said bond be filed and that the will be recorded together with the probate thereon. Witness my hand and office. 7th January 1840. T.M. WADE, Co., Court Clerk."

""shows JOSEPH DAVIS with 30 improved acres of land and 70 unimproved acres of land. Cash value of farm is $300. Value of farming implements/machinery is $10. He had 4 horses, 1 mulch cow, 2 working oxen, 2 other cattle, 10 sheep, 108 swine, Value of livestock is listed at $257. Plus he has 750 bushels of corn."
