Childhood
Sam Houston Boon was born January 2, 1859 at Old Boston, Bowie Co, Texas. He is listed with his parents at age 10 months in Bowie Co., Texas. Just before he turned four, Sam lost his father to bushwachers during the civil war. From what we have discovered so far, Sam's childhood was one of constant moves - usually looking for cotton to pick as his mother had to raise her children alone which during the reconstruction period after the civil war was a real ordeal.
Margaret Elizabeth Burkhalter, Sam's first wife and the mother of his children, was born June 1, 1853 in Queen City, Cass Co., Texas. She was the younger sister of Patricia Ann 'Permelia' Burkhalter who had married Sam's brother, Gus Boon, 13 years earlier. When it came time to settle down and look for a wife, Sam went back to his childhood home and picked an old time friend for his wife. Actually Margaret was 5 1/2 years older than he was. When Sam and Margared married on June 9, 1881 in Queen City, Cass Co., Missouri, Sam was 22 1/2 and Margaret had just turned 28. They would have just under 39 years together as man and wife.
After Margaret's death on April 26, 1920, Sam married a widow by the name of Myrtie Bell Taylor. Her husband, Chyos N. Sasser, had died October 29, 1918. Sam and Myrtie were married May 5, 1921 in Waco, McLennan Co., Texas. They would have 30 1/2 years together as Sam was almost 94 when he died and Myrtie outlived him another 8 years.
