The William Augustus 'Gus' Boone site is dedicated to my cousin and friend, Patsy (Boone) Branton. She descends from Gus's son, Robert Lee. She even lives very close to where I grew up in Texas.Without Patsy's dedication, enthusiasm, patience and support, this Boon site and Boon-Denby-Jones gedcom would still be at a standstill. This line had been put on hold for years. I've never met anyone before who has as much determination as she does. Just when I've think I've discovered all that I can on a family, she manages to find a census or something to open up many 'new doors' to explore.
If I ever make it back to Texas, you can be sure that I'll be stopping in to visit Patsy. Over the past year or so, we have shared a lot of our lives with each other. And both of us have watched this Boon file just 'balloon' and missing pieces just come together. Finally this file is becoming documented! Thanks Patsy!

Childhood
Gus was born in Troup County, Georgia. As a very young boy, he moved with his parents to the Republic of Texas. He watched his father construct buildings and help in the building of towns and later become a farmer. On the 1860 census of Bowie, Co., Texas, he is listed as William, age 8, with his parents. At the age of 14, the civil war broke out and Gus would have his father killed by Jayhawkers when he was 17. After his father was killed, it is said that he served in the civil the last two years. His mother was afraid the Jayhawkers would kill her sons for their Southern Sympathy.
Patricia Ann 'Permelia' Burkhalter, Gus's wife, was born September 7, 1848 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Henry Burkhalter and Mary 'Polly' Cagle. In 1880, William and Mary were living in the 4th District of Cass County, Texas. William Burkhalter was the son of Michael Burkhalter and Jennie Griffin. Mary (Cagle) was the daughter of George Washington Cagle and Martha Austin.
When Patricia Burkhalter died in March 1885, Gus was left with seven children between the ages of not quite four to age 16 1/2.Sometime between March - December 1885, within months of Pat's death, Gus married Prier Elvira Harris. At the time, she was 28 and he was 38. They had 3 children together. Then in May 1895, Gus was again left a widow with three more children between the ages of not quite 5 to not quite 9.
Within four months, Gus would marry Minnie Minerva Moore, a widow. At the time of marriage, Gus was 48 1/2 and Minnie was 20. After 6 1/2 years of marriage, Gus died and left Minnie a widow with two children, ages 5 and 2 1/2. Minnie would later remarry.

Patsy writes:
"My grandfather was a farmer, carpenter & a mid-wife in fact I would not be here today, My Papa saved my life when I was borned, i was borned at home and a Doctor was there, I had the cord around my neck and the old Doctor acted like he did'nt know what to do and Papa pushed him out of the way and flipped the cord off of my neck and got me to breathing. It always seemed like we had a special bond between us. Papa & Big mama were members of the hardshell Baptist Church.""My Papa Boone didn't use the 'E' all the time, but his kids did. Papa never used Robert, it was Bob or R.L "
