duty; Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Lafayette, IN.
      d. "The Quiet Rebels, the Story of the Quakers in America," Margaret H. Bacon,
1969; public library, Wilmington, NC.  West Jersey was purchased by two
Quakers in 1674.  In 1675 a group of Quakers on board the Griffin founded a
colony at Salem.  In 1677 a group of Quakers on board the Kent founded a
colony at Burlington.  By 1679, 800 Quakers had arrived and by 1681 there
were 1400 Quakers in the province.
      e. "Colonial New Jersey, A History," John E. Pomfret, 1973; public library,
Wilmington, NC.  Quakers left New England for Long Island due to religious
persecution.  By 1659 there were regular meetings at Oyster Bay.  In April
1665, the Navesink Patent in New Jersey was granted to Quakers and Baptists
from Gravesend, Long Island, previously Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Villages of Middletowns and Shrewsbury were founded.  When the Dutch took
New Jersey from 1673 to 1674, an oath of loyalty provides a census of East
New Jersey in 1673.  During the summer of 1675, Fenwick signed articles of
agreement with about 30 adventurers.  Those who purchased 1000 acres of
land were called proprietors.  He offered headrights of 100 acres to
families at a quitrent of 1d per acre.  Indentured servants were welcome.
These settlers were London Quakers who were shopkeepers and artisans.  The
Griffin with about 100 passengers arrived on Salem Creek on 11-23-1675 and
founded Salem, the first permanent English settlement in West Jersey.  The
majority of West Jersey propriety purchasers were Quakers - small
merchants, merchant craftsmen, or shopkeepers with some fluid capital.  One
could invest in a fraction of a share - 1/7 share at 50 pounds was common.
Of 120 individual purchasers, 17 were Irishmen, actually English Quakers
who moved to Dublin, and three were Scots.  The English purchasers were
"South Country" people from London and Middlesex, Northhampton, Hertford,
and Leicester; or "North Country" people from York, Nottingham, and Derby.
For list see Pomfret's "The Province of West New Jersey," 1956.  In the
Kent, 270 Yorkshire and London passengers arrived and settled Burlington in
1677.  Other ships arrived and by 1681 a total of 1400 Quakers had
immigrated to West Jersey.  In the Spring of 1682 a group of Quakers from
Ireland settled on Newton Creek south of Burlington.
