There are four gates in the Town Walls.
Scotsgate
Scotsgate is on the main road into Berwick at the top of Marygate, facing the Town Hall. The original gate was smaller and single arched. The present structure replaced it in the early nineteenth century. Until the battle of Waterloo this gate was locked at 10 p.m. each night.
The Cowport
This small gate is near the Barracks entrance at the end of The Parade. The only original gate remaining, the Cowport has portcullis grooves and a massive wooden door. As its name implies this gate was used by the citizens to lead their cattle out to pasture. Opposite is a redoubt called the Great Bulwark in the Snook, which is surrounded by a deep ditch.
The Ness Gate
The Ness Gate was built in 1816, to give access to the new pier and is reached along Ness Street at the foot of Ravensdowne.
The Shore Gate (or Sand Gate)
At the foot of Hide Hill, the Shore Gate, with its huge wooden doom, dates from the seventeenth century.
