ROSARIO family from South Canara

Welcome to the Ferris Family Connections Pages.
These pages contain the ROSARIO family, the descendants of Paul ROSARIO who immigrated to India from Portugal

Paul Rossa was a Jesuit who was expelled from Portugal in June 1758 when the Jesuits were stripped of all Portuguese possessions and exiled (by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Count of Oeiras who was later made the Maquis de Pombal in 1775). Along with four other Portuguese Jesuits and one Spanish Jesuit the group landed in India about 1759. Some say they were Jesuit Priests, others say they were Jesuit seminarians. One was a Brother.

The original names were Paul Rossa, Br. Moreira, Don Pachéco, Leon Texeira, Domingo Gonzales and the Spaniard was Francisco Fernandez. In India, they obtained jobs in the munition factories of Hyder Ali and married local Indian women.

Paul Rossa changed his name for reasons unknown to Paul Rosario and married a woman from North Canara. His family seems to have integrated into the Mangalorean community though they must have kept in touch with the original gropu as one great grand son (Peter Rosario) married possibly a great grand daughter (Angela Moreira) of Br. Moreira and another great grand son (Lazarus Salvador Rosario) married Rita Pachéco, possibly a great grand daughter of Don Pachéco.

Except for Paul Rossa and Francisco Fernandez I have very little knowledge of the descendants of the others as their family lines have not crossed with mine in the recent past (4 generations) so I do not know anyone to get further information from.
