William Holzer was born on July 6, 1860. He was the youngest son of Eugene Holzer and Mary Matilda Gross. William's parents are listed in Orwigsburg in the 1850 census. At this time the family consisted of Eugene as head, Matilda as wife, Mary, female age 5 and two boys, Edward age 3 and Charles, age 2.
||Not much is known about William's father, Eugene. In the 1850 census for Orwigsburg Borough, Eugene is listed as being 26 and born in Pennsylvania. This is contradictory to the 1920 census in which William Holzer's father is listed as having been born in Germany. Family history has Eugene's year of birth as being 1820. This picture as well as the information that Eugene's father's name was Wilhelm and his mother's name was Mary, came from the grandson of Marion Holzer Knittle, daughter of William Holzer and granddaughter of Eugene. It is believed that Eugene's father, Wilhelm, emmigrated from Germany in 1818 and that the family name might have originally been Von Holzer. Needless to say, we have quite a bit of research to still do on Eugene and his parents. As of this writing I have been unable to find Eugene and his family in the 1860 census. The last year I have seen any records for Eugene is 1854. In the records for St. John's Reformed Church in Orwigsburg, PA, the baptism for Louisa Reb. Holzer is recorded and her parents are listed as Eugene and Matilda.|
|Mary Matilda Gross was born February 15, 1820. She married Eugene Holzer sometime before 1845. Matilda is listed with her husband in the 1850 census and she is listed as being 24 years old. Her death is recorded in the records of St. John's Reformed Church. She died December 25, 1906 at age 86 years, 10 months and 10 days. This information gives us the birthdate mentioned above. She is listed in the 1870 census as being 46, in the 1880 census at age 48 and in the 1900 census at age 80 with her birth year given as 1820. Mary Matilda remained in the Orwigsburg area but it appears that her husband Eugene left the area sometime between 1854 and 1870 and died sometime between 1880 and 1900. The 1870 census lists Mary as head of household and in the 1880 census Mary M. Holtzer is listed as head of household and as married. In the 1900 census she is listed as a widow.||
