THE WILL OF JOHN PITT THE ELDER, YEOMAN,

OF BROKENBROUGH DATED 6 JULY 1661

In the Name of God Amen The sixth day of July in the year of our Lord God one Thousand six hundred sixty and one, and in the thirteenth yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraign Lord Charles the Second of England Scotland ffrance and Ireland King Defender of the ffaith; I John Pitt the elder of the pish of Brokenbrough in the County of Wilts, yeoman, being weake in body but of sound and perfect memory and understanding (praise be the Lord therefore) and calling to remembrance the uncertainty of this transistory life; and that all flesh must yield unto Death, doe make constitute ordaine and Declare this my last will and testament in manner and forme following; And first being penitent and sorry for all my sinnes past, most humbly desiring forgiveness of the same, I commend my soule unto Almighty God my Creator in whom and by and through the meritts of Jesus Christ my savior and redeemer I trust and believe afterwards to be saved and to have full remission and forgiveness of all my sinnes and that my Soule wth my body at the xxxxxx Day of Resurrection shall rise againe and enterwith the Kingdom of Heaven prepared for his xxxx and xxxx; And my body to the Earth whereof it was formed to be Decently buried at the Direction of my Executors hereafter to be named And for the settling of that temporall Estate and such goods as it hath pleased Gods xxxxx above my Desent or xxxxx to blesse me withall I doe order give and dispose of the same by this my will specified and declared, And I doe revoke, renounce xxxxxx and make voyd all wills formerly by me made either by word or writeing and Doe Declare this to be my last will and Testament, Ffirstly I give unto Elizabeth my wife the Sume of ffive shillings to be paid unto her within one yeare next after my decease; Alsoe I give unto my sonne John Pitt the younger the Sume of Two shillings to be paid to him with one year next after my decease; Alsoe I give unto my Sonne Daniell Pitt the Sume of ffive pounds to be paid to be paid(sic) to him with in two yeares next after my decease; And I Alsoe give and devise unto my sonne Daniell Pitts two children, that is to say, Joseph and Hanna ffive pounds apiece to be paid to their father within two yeares next after my decease he giveing an Acquittance unto my Executrix shall be a sufficient discharge for the said Legacyes; Alsoe I give and devise unto my daughter Hanna the wife of Isaac Davis the sume of ffive pounds to be paid within two yeares next after my decease; And alsoe I give unto my daughter Hanna Davis two children, that is to say Elizabeth and Isaac the sume of ffive pounds apeice to be paid to their ffather Isaac Davis within two years next after my decease the giveing Acquittance unto my Executrix shall be a sufficient discharge for the same; Alsoe I give and devise unto my son Timothy Pitt the sume of Six pounds of lawfull English money to be paid to him within three yeares next after my decease, and also I doe give unto him all the money that he doth nowe owe unto me; Alsoe I give unto my sonne Samuell Pitt the sume of Ten pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid to him within three yeares next after my decease; Alsoe I give and devise unto my daughter Elizabeth Pitt the sume of Ten pounds to be paid to her within ffowr yeares next after my decease; Also I give and devise until my sonne Simon Pitt the sume of ffive pounds to be paid to him within ffowr yeares next after my decease, And I likewise give unto him all the moneys which he doth owe unto me; All the rest of my goods, cattells, chattells, and all my substances whatsoever, which I have not bequeathed as aforesaid I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Pitt whom I make my whole and sole Executrix to see my debts paid these legacyes discharged and my ffunerall expenses disbursed; And I do constitute and appoint to be overseer of this my will William Nicholls and ffrancis Discoll both of Brokenbrough aforesaid which I doe hope wish and xxxx to see itt perFormed to the uttermost of the power, and I doe give them ffive shillings apeice for their payment to be taken thereinasfter witness whereof unto all the ....above...I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the day and yeare first above written x John Pitt x Signed Sealed Delivered and declared by the said John Pitt the elder as his last will and Testament in the presence of xx Fra.........Williams Nicholls X
