Israel Babbitt, Son of Stephen and Malinda Harrod Babbitt, Died in Service Paducah, KY
In excerpts from Samuel Glenn Harrod's, "Civil War Arrives at Smoky Row",
Israel Babbitt writes from St. Joseph, MO Dec. 22, 1861,
“I’m well and thriving. I weigh 200. I received a pair of socks from you and thank you very much. I’d like to be at your house, but I can’t tell when I will be. (Alas, he never saw Smoky Row again.) Tell grandmother I send my best respects.”
John Rankin writes to Lemon Cox, Pittsburg Landing Apr. 18, 1862,
"I suppose you have heard of the death of your cousin Israel. He died at Paducah on the 4th day of April. There is a young man in our regiment who saw him die and he said that just before he died he sang two of the prettiest hymns that he ever heard and then he said he turned over on his side and died. You can imagine how much he is missed from our company. I loved him as I love my brother. He was always kind to me and he did not have an enemy in the company."
The image of these words really touched my heart and I felt compelled to include these excerpts on this page. May God Rest His Soul

A Woodmen of the World insignia is engraved into the top of young Charles' stone. Barely visible now, it is a double circle that says, "Woodmen of the World" and something else that can no longer be read. I believe it may say "Memorial" as some others do. The motto, "Dum Tacet Clamat" (Though Silent He Speaks) may have graced the inner circle but is no longer visible. The center of the circle portrays a tree stump and may also have a garland of leaves over the top of it. This is one such visual "sign" of the organization seen on tombstones in various forms. WOW is a fraternal organization for men providing life insurance and community care.

Violet Marvel provides information about this mysterious little frame that I noticed sitting in the urn in the family plot. Violet remembers helping her parents as cemetery caretakers and says that these "holders" usually gave information until a marker was put up.
