*NOTE-FamilySearch.org has Celesta's middle name listed as "Vera" and her birth date and place listed as: 11 MAR 1908 Crystal Springs, Kidder, North Dakota which coincides with the 1925 School Census. FamilySearch also shows the date of death as 12 NOV 1931. I am not sure of the accuracy of the year of death due to the fact that Celesta is not shown in the April 02,1930 census. Another FamilySearch record shows Celesta Vera marrying a Melvin Frederick Clemens on 12 Feb 1931. More information is needed for verification of these details.

On 1/18/09 I found the following information online. It makes me wonder about the actual date of marriage that we have recorded as the 6th. The paper lists their marriage license for the 7th. Another thing that I am questioning is Theresa's name. The 1910 census spells it much more like it is listed in this newspaper clip. In addition, her last name is listed as Lawerence and not Lawver. This needs further information.

Herschel was one of many fine young men that enlisted to serve his country on August 30, 1918 at Camp Funston, Kansas (Ft. Riley). He and many others perished from the 1918 pandemic, the Spanish Influenza. His illness quickly grew into a most virulent pneumonia that he was unable to overcome and he passed away at just 23 years of age.
While reading Herschel's obituary it came over me to do a search on Camp Funston in the year 1918. Little did I know that his death was part of a great pandemic. I found a very interesting website that I thought well worth sharing. It gives a historical account of what was going on in Camp Funston while Herschel was there. It is an incredible site, written and arranged by Tom Johnston, son of Sgt. Charles Johnston. Mr. Johnston was just six months old when his father passed away so he was never able to know him. However, after his mother's death this treasure unfolded before them and gave a wonderful account of this man and his life. Please read it and enjoy it as much as I have.
