Volume 2 researched and copied by Pat Stickley, typed by Dorothy Shaffer. CCGS, P O Boc 682, Urbana, OH 43078 cDec2007"Spectacles, Specs, and Specs Jr" were "nom de plume" used by Squire H Wallace.)
Cable, June 27, 1904 William H Harper whose death is reported at Conesville, Iowa, was a grandson of the pioneer Joseph Hill of Concord Twp and was at one time a citizen of this county. He will be remembered by our older citizens, though for many years, an honored upright citizen of the Hawkeye State.

It is the former homestead of the pioneer Wm McGinnis. The mining operation is under the direction of William Harper, a son in law of Mr Idle as well as a son of Mrs Idle

William and Dicey had four children.
Something that is rather interesting to note is that Albert died on 12 Jun 1870 and the 1870 census was taken on 09 Jun 1870, three days prior to his death. Could Albert have been in a hospital since they don't show him as a member of their household? Or, could his date of death be wrong?
I have not found any additional information on M.S. Harper or Julia A. Harper to this date but am actively searching.
    1) Albert b. unknown d. 12 Jun 1870 Lot 51 Conesville Cemetery.
    2) M.S. b. circa 1862, Indiana
    3)Julia A. b. circa 1867, Iowa (namesake, paternal grandmother)

William and Dicey are shown in this census with two children and also with William's brothers John and James. William Harper & Dicey Idle married in Champaign Co., Ohio on 12 Feb 1860. Since the eldest child in this census was born in Indiana about 1862 then we now know that for a brief period they lived in Indiana or were just passing through. William was somewhat familiar with Indiana because he lived had lived there before. It is unknown where Albert was born. It could have been Champaign Co., OH or Indiana. Whether or not they were in the same area Wm. had lived in before remains undetermined.

    1880 > IOWA > MUSCATINE > ORONO
    Series: T9 Roll: 358 Page: 238 Line 35
Wm. Harper age 45 Farmer b. Ohio Father b. Virginia Mother born Virginia
Dicey age 45 Wife b. Ohio Father b. Ohio Mother born Ohio
Julia age 13 Daughter b. Iowa Father b. Ohio Mother born Ohio
Nancy age 7 Daughter b. Iowa Father b. Ohio Mother born Ohio

    Both children attended school.
Brothers, John and James are no longer living with William and Dicey. Whether James is still living in IA is unknown. By May of 1883 he is in St. Augustine, IL. This was where he married Mary Ann Wheeler, was struck by lightning, and died within 3 months time.
John's fate in life remains a mystery. He would've been about 34 in 1880. There is a Muscatine Co. marriage record for a John Harper and Susan Black that married on 23 Oct. 1870. It is possible that this is our John Harper but not confirmed. This may be a marriage record worth looking into. In 1870 John was living with his brother William and is shown in that census dated 09 June 1870. This is the last confirmed record I have for him.

    1900 > IOWA > MUSCATINE > ORONO TWP (Conesville)

William Harper age 64 b. May 1836 married for 40 years b. Ohio Father b. Maryland Mother b. Kentucky Occupation Retired? Farmer

Nettie Heath Granddaughter age3 b. July 1896 b. Iowa Father b. Indiana Mother b. Iowa
Willie Heath Grandson age1 b. Sept 1891 b. Iowa Father b. Indiana Mother b. Iowa
In this census, William and Dicey's daughter, Nancy was living with them. It stated that she was still married however she had divorced on 05 Sep 1899. It appears that William was retired from farming. Two of Nancy's daughters attended school, the eldest for 8 months, the other for 5 months. They were renting their home. This census also tells us that the child that appeared in the 1870 census, M.S. Harper, did indeed die before 1880.

Census Records for the Nancy Harper-Heath-Nelson Family

  • Notes 1: Marriage and death information for James and Mary Ann was located and contributed by Marge Vallazza. With this information I was able to connect my "suspect" Harper family from Indiana to my ancestor Elizabeth Harper Adkisson. From that point the brick wall to the ancestral lineage of Elizabeth Harper was broken for the first time.
The following information contributed by Sandi Evilsizer with sources helped to confirm my findings on James' other two marriages:
James married next Lena Jane Slonaker [50964]7 [MRIN: 18973], daughter of John Slonaker [17829] and Elizabeth [17830], 21 Jun 1877 in Champaign Co, OH By Rev E B Smith At Res Of Isaac Clem.8 The marriage ended in divorce 7 Sep 1881.
