Addisons of Westmorland, UK

Welcome to the Addisons of Westmorland Genealogy Web Site. This site documents branches of the Addison tree who originated in the Kings Meaburn, Morland, Levens area of northwestern England in the 1500s, some of whom emigrated to Canada in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, including my own Great Grandfather, Thomas Powley Addison, who came to Canada in 1907. With the Dec 2008 update there are now 60 new Addisons added to the site and over 921 Surnames included in this family tree. I had hoped to trace my family tree back to the famous English writer, Joseph Addison. While I did not find any direct link to Joseph Addison, I discovered a family tree rich in history, with many interesting characters and connections. Perhaps the most noteworthy person in this family tree is Reverend Robert Addison, a missionary who founded one of the first churches of England in Canada in 1792 and who officiated at the funeral of Sir Isaac Brock during the War of 1812. Although largely overlooked by history, he played a key role in the early days of Upper Canada.

About this site...
The first four features of this website were created using Legacy software which produces a listing of descendants and their families by generation with notes on individuals as well as a surname list, index, etc. Where possible I have included the text of indentures, wills and other legal documents which mention Addison family members as well as other members of the community. Researchers looking for their own family connections to the Levens, Heversham and Beathwaite Green area may find some names of interest in these documents. The other features (background, photos, links, etc) I have constructed myself using my limited knowledge of web-paging.
