Glen Owen Farm
About three miles Southeast of Berryville,
VA
Travel East from Berryville on State Route 7 (East Main
Street/Business SR-7 if downtown Berryville) approximatly two miles
from the intersection of SR-7 and US-340, to State Route 608, turn
right (South) for about one mile and watch for the long driveway that
takes you up the hill to the right to Glen Owen. The house looks
almost the same as when David lived there with the exception of an
addition at the near end. This photo was taken in July 2004.
This photo and caption was copied from the book "Annals of Clark
County, Virginia vol IV". Date of the photo is unknown. It was taken
from a different angle and the east addition had not been addedyet,
it is unmistakenly the same house about 240 years later. My biggest
regret is I was not able to stay around until the owners came home to
ask if they were aware of the cemetery and if not, would they allow
me to search for it. One day I hope to try again.
To continue: I did finally meet with the new owners of Glen Owen
Farms, a very nice and friendly family, in the fall of 2008. They
gave me a tour of the home and cleared up the where-a-bouts the
cemetery was located. The gentleman (no names) told me that as a
youngster he and others had played on the hill in the cemetery, using
the headstones to hide and seek. They had purchased Glen Owen within
the past few years and the cemetery was gone by then, desicrated by
the second owner prior to them.
This photo from the front porch of the home is of the hill where
the cemetery is/was and the bodies still rest there although the
headstones were "bulldozed". Asa Castleman 18 August 2009.
