Who is Robert Davison?

His grave at Rockville Cemetery

Robert Davison bought and maintained a grist and saw mill in East Rockaway, where he also kept a store and did considerable shipping The grist and mill were purchased from his Executors. Alexander and his sons continued until the mill rights were discontinued. The grist mill, the store and the shipping were given up in turn and finally the millwrights were discontinued to provide an open way up the river to Rockvile Center for pleasure boats.

The amount of water coming down the river decreased very much after Brooklyn bought the ponds above and piped the water to the city. The mill had to be run at whatever time the tide went out, This was tedious as often the mill had to be worked at night. The town right was issued for continuous service so they used the mill until they sold the mill eight. From this time they used only the lumber yard which they had established near the old railroad station on Ocean Ave. and did their sawing by electric power.

After Robert died., his son Alexander bought the property from his father's Executors and continued to live in the old homestead and his sons built their homes beside him along Ocean Ave.

When he died, his son Charles lived in the old homestead and his children lived in the neighboring homes. When Charles died, his sons continued to live there and conduct the mill until the mill right were discontinued. Now, in 1951, John and his son Donald carry on the business over by the Railroad station under the name of "Davison and Davison ". John lives with his son in Oceanside while other people live in the "Davison Row".
