Abney Problems & Solutions
Due to the fact that R. Robert Abney lost his hard-drive in Katrina, I have decided to do a problems page to help work out problems related to our Abney history. To begin the problems page, I will address the same problems which were addressed in the Newsletters previously written by R. Robert Abney. Once responses have been received, they will be added and we can have family discussion on each topic and see if we can come to some conclusions. I am excited about the opportunity to be working with other Abney researchers and hope this will be one way to help us all hurdle brick walls. The order of problems will correspond with the newsletters. Also, there are things that do not seem to properly fit and I will also address them in this problems forum. I look forward to each and every response and will add responses with the name and address of the responder provided the responder wants their name and address added to the sight.
#1- 1790 SC CHARLES ABNEY
In the 1790 Federal Census of South Carolina, there is one Charles ABNEY
enumerated in the Cheraw District. In his household are 2 free white males of 16
years and upward (including head of household), one free white male under 16
years, and one free white female, no other free persons nor slaves. Does anyone
know who his parents are?
The first Charles ABNEY in my database is a son of Pvt. William ABNEY (son of
Dr. Abraham ABNEY). This Charles was born in Virginia in 1794 and died in
Quincy, Illinois before 1840. He married Elizabeth WILLIS and had issue. He
obviously can’t be the 1790 Charles since he wasn’t born yet. Did Dr. Abraham
ABNEY have a Charles ABNEY who would have been a brother of Pvt. William
and uncle to the 1790 Charles?

#2-The Dannett Abney Dilemma
I have noticed much confusion over the various Dannett ABNEY’s in the South
Carolina records.
Can anyone prove that Dannett ABNEY Jr. did or did not migrate to South
Carolina?
Does anyone have proof that the George ABNEY who married Sarah "Sally"
GRIFFITH was a son of Dannett ABNEY (son of George ABNEY) or a son of
Dannett ABNEY III (son of Dannett ABNEY Jr.)?
Does anyone have proof that the Samuel ABNEY who married Mary RILEY was
a son of Dannett ABNEY (son of George ABNEY) or a son of Dannett ABNEY III
(son of Dannett ABNEY Jr.)?

Dannett Jr. did not migrate to South Carolina. Furthermore, he did not make
mention in his will of a son named Dannett III. We therefore must conclude that:
a) He had no son named Dannett, and b) George ABNEY who married Sarah
"Sally" GRIFFITH and Samuel ABNEY who married Mary RILEY were sons of
Dannett ABNEY (son of George ABNEY and Unity).
For those of you who knew this, the "Dannett Abney Dilemma" was no dilemma
at all. However for the many of us who did not know this, it is very exciting
news and again, on behalf of our cousins needing this information, we thank all
of our correspondents.
Besides the Will correcting the previous information we had on the family of
Dannett Jr., it seems to have solved some problems on other lines as well.
Sarah ABNEY & Reuben ABNEY, formerly considered children of Dr. Abraham
ABNEY, were children of Dannett ABNEY Jr. Maacah ABNEY, once considered a
daughter of Dannett ABNEY Sr. and later of George ABNEY, was a also a
daughter of Dannett ABNEY Jr. It is therefore doubtful that Dr. Abraham had
children named Sarah & Reuben, and that George had a daughter named
Maacah.

#4-Elizabeth ‘Charity’ Malina ABNEY
Can anyone prove or disprove that the Charity Malina (Malonia) ABNEY who
married Absalom DEAN was a daughter of Nathaniel ABNEY Jr. (son of Pvt.
Nathaniel ABNEY Sr., son of Michael ABNEY Sr. [son of George ABNEY &
Unity] & Ann TURNER)? She was also referred to as Elizabeth Malonia ABNEY
in other documents.
Can anyone prove or disprove that her husband, Absalom DEAN was a son of
Sgt. George DEAN Sr. (of the American Revolutionary War), and a brother of
George DEAN Jr. who married Sabina ABNEY, daughter of John ABNEY [son of
Capt. Nathaniel ABNEY] & Rachel LARK?

#5-Parentage of John Andy ABNEY
Can anyone prove the parents of John Andy ABNEY (born 13 May 1889 in either
Georgia or Alabama)? John Andy ABNEY married Berta FARMER? They had at
least one son, Carl Horace ABNEY born in 1923. John’s father was known to this
branch of the family simply as "Bish" ABNEY. However, that is the extent of the
genealogical knowledge on this branch. Bish’s real name (if Bish is his nickname)
is unknown, as is his birth date, place, wife, &c.

#6-Parentage of Absalom ABNEY
There is much confusion over two Absalom ABNEY’s (one a son of William
"Uncle Bill" ABNEY & Ann BARNES; the other a son of 1st Sgt. John ABNEY &
Susan TROUP).
According to a Family Bible Record in possession of Clara Estella Cooper
Shavers (in 1989), one Absalom P. ABNEY (b. 09 Aug 1803, d. 07 Sep 1855) m. 04
Jan 1835 to one Rosannah (b. 09 May 1817, d. 18 Mar 1901). This Absalom &
Rosannah had issue:
1. Martha Elizabeth ABNEY (b.28 Sep 1835) m. 25 Jan 1856 John E. DAVIDSON.
2. Mary Ellen ABNEY (b. 27 Jan 1837, d. 18 Sep 1863) m. 10 Dec 1855 Henry NEWSOME.
3. Elvira ABNEY (b. 11 Oct 1839, d. 20 Oct ????) m. 18 Jun 18?? Robert James STATHAM. (Elvira was the twin of Elvina)
4. Elvina ABNEY (b. 11 Oct 1839, d. 13 Jul 1858) (Elvina was the twin of Elvira)
5. Thomas William ABNEY (b.02 Jul 1842)
6. Permelia Francis ABNEY (b.11 Jul 1844, d. 09 Jun 1917) m. 07 Nov 1867 Benjamin Eli COOPER.
7. John W. ABNEY (b.08 Nov 1846, d. 1870) m. 10 Nov 1866 n.n.
8. Cynthia Harriett ABNEY (b.29 Sep 1849) m. 10 Jan 1869 Henry W. WALL.
9. Nancy Jane ABNEY (b. 22 Nov 1852, d. 11 Apr 1863).
The marriage record on Blue Banner Software’s marriage records shows
Absalom ABNEY m. 04 Jan 1835 in Newton Co., GA Rosana HALL.
If Absalom Troup ABNEY was b. 02 Jul 1795, and d. 26 Apr 1856, it is obvious
that the Absalom "P." ABNEY above is not Absalom "Troup" ABNEY. If this is
correct, then the children generally accepted as those of Absalom Troup ABNEY
are NOT his, but those of Absalom P. ABNEY & Rosannah HALL. It is also
evident that it was Absalom P. ABNEY (not Absalom Troup ABNEY) who
married Rosannah HALL.
If the above is correct, then who are the parents of Absalom P. ABNEY? Are they
William "Uncle Bill" ABNEY & Ann BARNES? If that is correct, then whose
children are those that are generally accepted as Absalom’s (i.e. 1. Benjamin
"Ben" ABNEY, b. ca.1822 who m. Rebecca and had issue. 2. John B. ABNEY b. ca.
1832 who m. (as her second husband) Tabitha ABNEY, daughter of George P.
ABNEY Sr. & Rosalie O’LEARY)? Are the other children credited as Absalom’s
(son of Uncle Bill) actually those of the Absalom P. ABNEY (i.e. Frances is
actually Permelia Francis, Samantha is actually Cynthia, and Nancy is Nancy
Jane.)?
