CAUSES OF DEATH 1875 - Thanks to Bill Martin for this:

361 or 10.7% of the male deaths in New Zealand were the result of violence. 36 of these were aged under 5 years and the remaining 325 over 5 years old. 26.3% died from Zymotic diseases, 7.8% died from diarrhea & dysentery, and 5.7% from typhus and typhoid 12.2% from constitutional diseases, 6.5% from phthisis. Respiratory problems accounted for 13.5% of all male deaths. Infant mortality was high with 1,514 of the 3,376 male deaths being under years of age.

While there was only 86 females who died as a result of violence, 50 of them were aged under 5 years and the remaining 36 over that age. Violent deaths of females accounted for 3.7% of all female deaths for the year 35.5% of all female deaths were from Zymotic diseases with diarrhea and dysentery accounting for 10.4% and 6.2% from typhus and typhoid. 12.3% from constitutional diseases, 5.1% from phthisis. Respiratory problems accounted for 12.0% of all female deaths Infant mortality was even higher amongst the female population at 1,263 from a total of 2,336.
