The
original tintype of this photograph
was in an envelope labeled "Gram" that was found inside of a box of family memorabilia that had belonged to Julia Humes Bilyeu. "1864" is scratched on the back. Since Eliza Gilmore Humes, Julia's paternal grandmother died in 1860, this must be her maternal grandmother, Rebecca Francis Rowland "Fannie" was the wife of farmer and confederate soldier, Robert Rowland. Robert Madison Rowland 1822-1865 Rob
enlisted twice during the
war, first with Co. A,
28th VA Infantry on
August 1861. Wounded at
Frazier's Farm on
30 June 1862, he was
discharged 24 July 1862 because
of physical disability
as a result of
his wound.
He
re-enlisted Oct. 31, 1864, riding to Luray, VA, to join Co.
C, 14th VA Calvary of
the Valley
Rangers which
had been
organized by his
brother- in-law, Capt.
William A. Lackey. Less than two weeks later,
during the battle of Cedarville on Nov
12th, Rob
was captured when
Confederate troops were surprised mid- stream
in the Shenandoah
River by Union
Forces. Rob was taken
to the Union military
prison at Point
Lookout,
Maryland and died
there of Chronic Diarrhea on May
29, 1865 at 43 yrs.old

Rowland-Gilmore Marriage Bond Case of the Missing Gunpowder Captain Rowland's Rifle Rowland-Pitzer House Letters From Fannie News of her husband's
capture in mid-November1864 reached Fannie
quickly, but she had no way to know if he was well or where the Union Soldiers had taken him until January 25, 1865 when she received his letter of December 1st. She wrote back as quickly as she could, and this letter, along with another Fannie wrote to Rob in May of 1865 is online. Fannie was 45 years old when she died in December 1873, some eight years after Rob's death. She is buried at High Bridge Presbyterian Cemetery near the graves of her parents and other Lackey relatives.  BACK TO ROWLAND FAMILY |
