Ross 1822
ROSS is pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Wye; it is a nominal borough, in the county of Hereford, 127 miles from London, 16 from Gloucester, 14 from Hereford, 12 from Ledbury, and 8 from Newent. Its municipal government is vested in a mayor, (who is nominated) a serjeant at mace, and four constables. The town of Ross, is celebrated, on account of it's having been the residence, of the "Man of Ross," and during his long life, the scene of his active benevolence. The church is a spacious and neat edifice, originally founded by Robert de Betun, Bishop of Hereford, in the 13th century. There are also three other places of worship, for dissenters. The Blue Coat School, (originally set up by Dr. Charles Whiting, rector of this place, in 1709, and restored by Walter Scott, in 1786) has educated and clothed in its charity, thirty of each sex. There is also a Workhouse, the gift of a Mrs. Jane Furney, a native of this town, who was remarkable for her piety and benevolence. In the Grammar School, called St. Mary's, are educated free, two boys, the master of which is endowed with a small stipend. There are also other Schooks, on the Madras principle, supported by voluntary contribution. There are five Alms Houses, the principal of which is Webb's, which has a fair endowment. Fairs occus on the following days, Thursday after March 10th, Holy Thursday, Corpus Christi, July 20th, (wool principally) Thursday after October 10th, and Dec. 11; market day is Thursday. The census in 1801, was 553 houses, and 2347 inhabitants, in 1811, 517 houses and 2261 inhabitants, and in 1821, 585 houses and 2957 inhabitants, being an increase of 696 in ten years.
