R. ROYTHORNE had written to the school committee that
his son Charles had come home from school with wales on the backs of both
hands, which were caused by Mr POPPOLEWELL's cane. Charles ROYTHORNE had
been struck as he couldn't answer the question
: How many wives & relations did Henry V111 have ?
James SNEYDON ; stated that Charles had not answered the question, but
Minnie RYAN had. . Mr POPPLEWELL had struck him and then Charles threw
a slate at Mr POPPLEWELL. He didn't think Charlie had meant to throw the
slate at Mr POPPLEWELL. G. ILLINGWORTH - Didn't think that Charlie was
struck harder than he does the rest of us. Charlie wouldn't hold out his
hand and that was the reason he was struck on the knuckles. The Chairman
did not believe children should be flogged for not knowing lessons, but
that flogging should only be resorted to in cases of misdemeaneours. He
thought Mr ROYTHORNE & the Master, Mr POPPLEWELL should reconcile
over the matter and would move to that effect. Mr ROYTHORNE could not
agree to this.
The committee then moved that they had held an inquiry and it was their
opinion that there is nothing to to report to the Board.
